  • We honor freedom not just by celebrating it, but by using it well. As I get older I think Independence Day means something a little different now to just a holiday. Don’t get me wrong, I still love the fireworks, flags, family time, cookouts, friends… the works! But beyond all that it reminds me how very lucky I am to be born in a land where you can believe in freedom, opportunity and being the captain of your own life. For me, that’s what freedom looks like. The ability to work hard, take risks, start a business, raise a family, survive hardship, fail spectacularly, dust off, get up, and go at it again. When I look back on my own path I'm grateful for the freedom to create something from nothing. Starting and building a business isn't easy and has never guaranteed success... There have been great years, not-so-great years, and plenty of lessons learned the hard and expensive way, but having the freedom to build, to service clients, work with awesome colleagues and hopefully have a small impact in someone else’s life is not lost on me. But it goes beyond individual liberty, independence is communal. Freedom carries responsibility – to our families, to our communities, to our neighbors, to the people coming up after us. And there's no better way to honor that freedom than to live it wisely – through honest hard work, service to others, the ability to listen to differing perspectives, remembering those who made it possible, and being committed to making it all better. We have a ways to go. We've always had a ways to go. But the promise of America – that you can chase a better life and contribute something meaningful – is alive and well. This Independence Day I celebrate all that, but most importantly, gratitude, responsibility, and opportunity. Happy 4th.
