Free Software Movement of Telangana, India.
About us
Swecha is a non-profit organisation committed to grow Free Software Movement in Telugu States i.e., Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. We have a working system in which most common tasks like writing and printing documents, browsing the web, sending/receiving emails, chatting, editing graphics etc. can all be in Telugu. The screen shot on the right shows you the Swecha desktop, a GNOME desktop localized to Telugu. Most of this work will ultimately reach all the GNU/Linux distributions. It is also packed into an easy to use LiveCD distribution. The project has also developed a Telugu text-to-speech system and integrated it with the desktop. Since, one can hear the text on the desktop or web page by pointing at it, illiterate people may use it to access the desktop, read news on the web etc. It contains a Telugu text-to-speech system integrated with the desktop. Since, one can 'hear' the text on the desktop by pointing at it, illiterate people may use it to access the desktop, read news on the web etc. The word Swecha means Freedom in Telugu. Swecha is a Free Software project driven by volunteers. Most components of the projects are licensed under the GNU General Public License. You can use this software for any purpose, make modifications you like and distribute it to anyone. We are seeking for more volunteers in tasks involving development, translation of English text to Telugu, etc. If you are willing to join the effort, please contact us and see how to get involved.

For the past 48 months, Swecha has organized Free Medical Camps in Hyderabad to ensure accessible healthcare reaches people living in slums, working-class families, daily wage labourers, and senior citizens without family support. With the support of dedicated doctors and hundreds of committed volunteers, this initiative has delivered over 21,000 medical consultations to date. Thousands have further benefited from free health check-ups, distribution of essential generic medicines, provision of eyeglasses, and facilitation of cataract surgeries — ensuring both preventive and corrective care reach underserved communities. As patient volumes increased, it became evident that scale demanded structure. We therefore built a dedicated eHRS platform to bring transparency, efficiency, and accountability to the entire workflow. Our eHRS digitally integrates patient registration, vitals recording, doctor consultations, prescription management, and generic medicine disbursement — significantly improving operational efficiency, data traceability, queue management, and inventory control. Real-time doctor allocation, unique digital patient identifiers, smart generic medicine stock management, and instant analytics now enable us to plan and deliver care more effectively. This milestone reflects more than continuity; it represents the strength of system-oriented healthcare delivery. By combining disciplined processes with open technology, we are demonstrating how scalable and transparent healthcare infrastructure can be built at the grassroots level. As we move forward, we invite developers, designers, system architects, healthcare professionals, and open-source contributors to collaborate with us in strengthening and expanding our eHRS platform. We invite all the students, developers, researchers and professionals to contribute our Free and Open Source Health Tech Solution. e-HRS is a Free and Open Source (AGPLv3 License) Application Frontend: https://lnkd.in/gq_eMay6 Backend: https://lnkd.in/g_5tnYr3 Together, we can architect accessible healthcare infrastructure for communities that need it most. On the occasion of International Mother Language Day, we would like to share an update from our Telugu AI efforts. Our Corpus Applications are now localized in Telugu, marking our contribution to the broader Indic l10n (localisation) project, and making it easier for native speakers to contribute directly in their own language. As you know, building strong Telugu AI systems and Indic language technologies fundamentally depends on high-quality, community-driven cultural corpus contributions. Through this platform, we have enabled a structured collection of datasets: Text, Speech, Video, and Images. We call upon all Telugu language enthusiasts to actively contribute to the corpus and help strengthen our digital language ecosystem. 👉🏽Access our Corpus collection web app at https://corpus.swecha.org 👉🏽Download Andriod App at https://lnkd.in/g4wjuT-4

Congratulations Dr. Kumarasamy Thangaraj for the prestigious Padma Shri Award 2026! For us, Dr. Thangaraj holds a special place for contributions to science and society! He pioneered the Coastal Migration Theory that traced the first modern human migration out of Africa through the southern coastal route through India to the Andaman region approximately 65,000 years ago.His research demonstrated that the Indian population descends from two major ancestral groups: Ancestral South Indians (ASI) and Ancestral North Indians (ANI).We are proud for having him as Keynote speaker at the first AI Days Conference in 2024.Inaugurating the Healthcare track, he shared valuable insights on managing and interpreting large-scale datasets in his talk titled “Genomics Data:Past,Present, and Future Challenges”.An inspirational talk that reflected upon his vast experience in large human genome sequencing projects.Dr. Thangaraj as students and colleagues fondly call him is widely recognised for his outstanding contributions as a Senior Scientist at the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) and as the Director of the Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD). However, what marks his distinction is his openness and being accessible. He welcomed collaborations with open arms with any university faculty in the country and notably he provided opportunity and accepted students from towns or rural regions. He nurtured them and made them successful. His pioneering work in Indian population genomics has significantly advanced the understanding of the origins of the present-day Indian population. He analysed mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) for population studies, as it is maternally inherited, does not undergo recombination, which creates unique mutations that help distinguish closely related yet distinct populations. Leveraging these advantages, he used mitochondrial DNA to trace maternal lineages, enabling the reconstruction of population migration patterns and the assessment of genetic diversity over time. His proposed Coastal Migration Theory is based on these studies.Dr. Thangaraj’s work revealed how strict endogamy in India has led to population-specific recessive diseases, identifying key biomarkers including those linked to sudden cardiac arrest (cardiomyopathy). Through over 200 research publications, he demonstrated that Indian populations carry unique disease-specific mutations and SNPs, strongly reinforcing the need for India-focused genomic research to understand population-specific genetic variations. At a time when much research in premier institutions is shaped by Global North priorities, Dr. Thangaraj stood apart with his unwavering focus on problems rooted in the Indian context. His Padma Shri recognition is a powerful affirmation for scientists committed to solving India’s challenges. An inspiration to many, congratulations, Dr. Thangaraj! VISWAM.AI (a joint initiative of Swecha Telangana and International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad (IIITH)), in collaboration with Software Freedom Law Center, India (SFLC.in), has released a new draft license for public consultation to address critical gaps in existing open-source licenses related to data usage, attribution, and the meaning of openness in the AI era. The release was announced at the roundtable “Understanding Trust and Safety in AI: From Code to Creativity”, held at IIIT Hyderabad on 31 January 2026, and jointly organized by VISWAM.AI, Software Freedom Law Center, India (SFLC.in).in, FOSS United, and The Linux Foundation India. Community-led dataset initiatives are gaining momentum, but the absence of suitable licensing frameworks risks appropriation without attribution or reciprocal contribution. This new license prevents proprietary claims, ensures credit to original providers, requires verifiable data provenance to detect bias and ensure safety, and mandates that all modified or derived datasets be shared under the same license, drawing on software copyleft principles. In the coming days, VISWAM.AI and SFLC.in will conduct a series of online and in-person public consultations to gather feedback on the draft license. The draft license for consultation is available at: https://lnkd.in/gahecmGJ Sandeep Shukla Ramesh Loganathan Kiran Chandra CV Jawahar Manish Shrivastava Praveen Chandrahas Prasanth Sugathan Chaitanya Chokkareddy Mishi Choudhary, Esq.
