I had been wanting to join the Climate Ninja by The Sustainability Mafia for a while. When the selection mail came, that was probably the best part of that week. One of the sessions that stayed with me. Aalok A. Deshmukh from SuperHumanRace broke down something he called metrics that matter. The idea is simple but brutal: if you're not speaking in the currency of the person controlling the budget, you're not really communicating. You're just reporting. He used the Empire State Building retrofit as the example. A team had identified energy efficiency measures that would cut significant carbon emissions. The technology worked. The analysis was sound. The building owners still wouldn't move until the team stopped talking about CO2 and started talking about dollars saved per year per square foot. Same data. Different language. The project got approved. What stayed with me was the chart he showed Net Present Value on one axis, CO2 savings on the other. The assumption most people walk in with is that maximising carbon reduction means accepting a financial loss. The chart showed something different. Up to a point, both move together. It's only when you push past that threshold, chasing the last ton of CO2 that the economics collapse faster than the emissions drop. The conflict between planet and profit is real. But it's also smaller than how it usually gets framed. And that framing is costing us more than we think. #ClimateNinja #SustainabilityMafia #Sustainability #ClimateAction
