real problem killing tamilnadu startup ecosystem! . . . is that true? somewhat true. we have to accept this. when an ecosystem is growing, early mistakes are fine. but when the same mistakes continue for years, they silently kill first-time founders. everyone says tamil nadu doesn’t have enough capital. i disagree. the real problem in the tamil nadu startup ecosystem is not funding. it’s fragility. and i’m saying this after working with 600+ startups. let me tell you a story. a founder from tier 2 tamil nadu once told me: “prem bruh, investors are not interested in our region.” i opened his deck. no clear problem statement. no sharp positioning. no proper use of funds. no capital roadmap. no understanding of dilution. but he blamed investors. this is not a funding problem. this is a founder readiness problem. and no, i am not blaming the founder either. because tell me honestly. where do founders go to properly learn fundraising? where is the roadmap? step 1: build a fundable business model step 2: find the right investors step 3: set the right valuation and ownership split step 4: understand and negotiate the term sheet step 5: prepare for due diligence step 6: sign a clear shareholder agreement step 7: close the investment professionally step 8: stay compliant after raising funds where do they learn this? marketing? growth school. coding? scaler. fundraising? is there a school? “Start Insights” & fundraising is a high-bar game. do you need a badge for it? in reality, yes. if you’re from a top university, vcs assume you’ve already been tested. execution capability is pre-validated. but what about a founder from salem? from trichy? from erode? no ivy league tag. no unicorn alumni network. how do they know all this? this is why first-time founders make more mistakes. not because they lack intelligence. because they lack structured exposure. inside start insights’ portfolio data, we’ve seen something interesting. less than 1 out of 100 founders have previously raised institutional money. think about that. that number speaks about ecosystem maturity. and it doesn’t stop there. cap table discipline reflects shareholder maturity. bookkeeping reflects financial discipline. startup governance is still a foreign word for many early founders. financial conversations are often the last priority at the founder’s table. and then we wonder why investors hesitate. right now, tamil nadu doesn’t have a funding shortage. it has a clarity shortage. and clarity compounds. if we build structured fundraising education at scale, capital will follow. if we build governance culture early, investors will participate faster. i moved to chennai for a greater cause. to build that structure more seriously. if you are building and struggling with fundraising, i’m one step away. drop a message. let’s catch up over hot chocolate after work. prem ❤️
