The Space Community Mourns Wally Funk Wally Funk, aviator, last surviving member of the Mercury 13, and the only one of the thirteen to reach space, passed away on July 8, 2026, at the age of 87. Denied the chance to fly in the 1960s despite outperforming nearly every test put before her, she finally reached space in 2021 aboard Blue Origin's New Shepard at age 82. As a flight instructor, she trained more than 3,000 pilots and logged more than 30,000 hours of flight time. The space community has lost one of its most enduring pioneers. Space Force Intercepts Satellite The U.S. Space Forces – Space (S4S) and True Anomaly announced the successful completion of the first tactical operational sortie under the #VictusHaze mission on July 1. True Anomaly's JACKAL-0004 autonomous orbital vehicle executed a rapid rendezvous and proximity operations intercept by finding, approaching, and imaging a newly deployed target satellite within 61 hours of receiving an action order — beating the military's strict 72-hour target. The mission marks the first commercial orbital intercept in history and signals a new era of in-space operations. SpaceX Sets Reuse Record SpaceX broke another rocket reuse record on July 9 when it launched its most-flown #Falcon9 booster for a 36th time, in support of the #Starlink 10-42 mission, adding another 29 broadband satellites to the company's low Earth orbit constellation. Booster 1067 is now pursuing the all-time record held by #NASA's Space Shuttle Discovery, which launched and returned 39 times. SpaceX has now completed 80 Falcon 9 launches in 2026 alone.
