  • The unmanned industry has made tremendous progress in airframes, payloads, endurance, autonomy, and manufacturing scale. But one of the hardest challenges remains the connective tissue underneath it all: keeping unmanned systems connected, controllable, and mission-relevant when line-of-sight breaks. Drone dominance will not be achieved by airframes alone. It will require a unified ecosystem: trusted platforms, scalable manufacturing, interoperable payloads, resilient supply chains, and the networking layer that allows unmanned systems to operate as part of a distributed mission architecture.   • Multinational operations bring together different forces, equipment, radios, networks, data standards, and TTPs. Some systems are modern. Some are legacy. Each may work well independently, but operational value depends on whether they can contribute to a shared picture. When networks remain fragmented, situational awareness fragments with them. The result is familiar. Partner forces often have information that matters, but that information does not reliably make it into the shared operational picture. Somewear’s scalable mesh radios and software-defined architecture enable multinational teams to route Partner Force data into a TAK server, helping bridge mixed networks and improve the shared picture across the force.

  • When the Orion capsule splashed down in the Pacific, NASA's work wasn't finished. During the Artemis II astronaut recovery operation, NASA's Search and Rescue Team used Somewear Labs' resilient edge networking to maintain a real-time operating picture across every recovery asset. 16 Somewear Hotspots connected: • 4 helicopters • 3 Zodiac boats • 4 rigid-hull inflatable boats (RHIBs) • The primary recovery vessel The result: continuous visibility and coordination across the recovery fleet during a mission-critical operation.   • It was great to be in Tampa for SOF Week. Throughout the conference, conversations with customers, Partner Forces, and industry partners centered around a critical challenge: how to maintain resilient, interoperable communications in contested and degraded environments. The event was an opportunity to share how Horizon helps keep unmanned systems connected and controllable when line-of-sight breaks, ensuring they stay mission-relevant when it matters most.   • The scaling challenge in drone manufacturing isn’t just the unmanned systems themselves; it’s enabling every supporting component around them as well.   • Next week, the Somewear Labs team is taking Horizon to SOF Week. In contested environments, network connectivity is often the first thing to fail, meaning the difference between compromised and successful missions comes down to maintaining command and control. Horizon keeps unmanned systems connected farther and longer by automatically transitioning from line-of-sight (LOS) to satellite connectivity, ensuring operators maintain command and control beyond-line-of-sight (BLOS).     Endurance and capability have long been central priorities in unmanned systems development. Increasingly, attention is being placed on survivability and operational continuity in contested environments. This extends beyond kinetic survivability to maintaining sensing, communications, and mission effectiveness when infrastructure degrades, links are interrupted, or the airspace itself becomes hostile. That challenge is showing up in very different parts of the sector. Skyeton’s latest Raybird upgrade introduces active anti-interceptor and threat detection capabilities designed to help reconnaissance platforms respond to hostile drones in real time. Survivability is increasingly tied not only to altitude and endurance, but also to how quickly a system can detect threats and adapt during a mission. Communications are evolving in the same direction. Somewear Labs’ Horizon radio is designed to maintain control continuity by automatically transitioning between line-of-sight and satellite connectivity when links degrade. As more platforms operate in distributed and contested environments, resilient communications are becoming less of a specialist capability and more of a baseline operational requirement. The same operational pressures are influencing ISR infrastructure. During ORION 2026, Elistair’s Khronos Tethered DroneBox provided continuous aerial surveillance without relying on GNSS or RF infrastructure, reinforcing the role persistent systems can play alongside free-flying platforms in high-intensity environments. What stands out across these developments is how survivability is now being shaped as much by continuity and adaptability as by the platform itself. Sustaining sensing, communications, and operational relevance under disruption is becoming a central requirement across unmanned systems development.   • Big shoutout to Mason Elms and Matt Roberts for representing Somewear at the xTech National Security Hackathon hosted by Army PIT and Shield Capital this past weekend in San Francisco. After 24 hours of hacking, they developed a resilient capability for real-time object detection and target recognition. The data was routed to users in the field, actioned in real time, and updated back to C2, all through the Somewear network. This is also a clear example of Somewear’s culture in action: pushing our technology forward, testing bold ideas, and building alongside others working on some of the hardest problems in national security.
