Last month SkillWorks Boston hosted the National Skills Coalition at The Boston Foundation for a collaborative visioning workshop with #Massachusetts #workforce leaders and practitioners, advocates, employer groups, and workers/training participants to inform a bold new workforce development policy agenda, as part of NSC’s development of their New Promise of Work Campaign – a national initiative to advance workforce policies that ensure everyone has a fair shot at real economic #opportunity. We heard from a diverse array of voices from across different sectors and lived experiences, outlining current challenges and barriers, as well as hopes and aspirations for what an ideal workforce development system would look like and how it would function for workers, learners, and employers. It was an energizing day and we look forward to continuing to collaborate with NSC and state partners on realizing the bold new vision we’re shaping together. Thank you to everyone who joined us! Career coaching is one of the most effective supports for mobility. So why is it so hard to access? At some institutions, a single career coach is responsible for thousands of students. At the same time, coaches are expected to do far more than career advising- helping clients navigate housing, childcare, and financial instability. “Everything in their life impacts their ability to get a job and keep a job.” We’re asking coaches to function as critical infrastructure, without resourcing them as such. Massachusetts can strengthen its workforce and address labor shortages by investing in vocational English (#VESOL) programs that help immigrant workers build industry-specific language skills and access better-paying #careers.
