  • We’re proud to share that SILQ Technologies, Inc. and UCLA’s Kaner Group have received the Royal Society of Chemistry’s 2026 Materials Chemistry Horizon Prize. This prestigious international recognition celebrates the development of Silq's zwitterionic polymer surface treatment for medical devices, an innovation designed to help reduce device-associated infections by preventing bacterial attachment without drugs, antimicrobial killing, or traditional antibiotic mechanisms. With catheter-associated urinary tract infections among the most common healthcare-associated infections, and antibiotic resistance continuing to rise, new approaches to infection prevention are urgently needed. We’re especially honored that this award recognizes the power of academic-industry collaboration: foundational chemistry from Professor Richard Kaner’s group at UCLA, paired with SILQ Technologies’ engineering, regulatory, quality, manufacturing, and clinical translation capabilities. Congratulations to the full recognized team: Na He, Richard B. Kaner, Jack Kavanaugh, Min Kyu Lee, Brian T. McVerry, Ethan Rao, and Verne Sharma. Thank you to the Royal Society of Chemistry, our partners, advisors, clinicians, and patients who continue to inspire this work. This milestone strengthens our commitment to advancing infection-resistant medical device technologies for broader patient care. Silq Technologies has developed and commercialized an advanced zwitterionic surface-treatment technology that makes implantable and indwelling medical devices resistant to biofilm, encrustation, and protein adhesion—without the use of drugs. The company’s proprietary Silq surface treatment platform integrates bio-inspired chemistry onto device surfaces to reduce infection, inflammation, and device-related complications. Its ClearTract®–branded urinary catheter has received FDA clearance and is supported by multiple clinical studies demonstrating reductions in infection and inflammation, while the broader platform is designed for application across a wide range of implanted and indwelling devices. The company has achieved significant momentum recently, including: • Successfully completed a multi-site, randomized clinical study demonstrating a significant reduction in device-related complications using Silq’s zwitterionic surface treatment. • Executed a strategic collaboration agreement with NuSil Technology, LLC to accelerate broad-based adoption of Silq’s surface treatment across implantable silicone devices. • Secured group purchasing agreements with Vizient, Inc. and Premier, Inc., expanding access to more than 7,500 hospitals nationwide. • Launched more than a dozen evaluation programs with leading OEMs to assess Silq’s technology across single-use, short-term, and long-term implantable devices. We’re excited to announce that CTO Brian McVerry, Ph.D. has been selected to present Silq Technologies at LSI USA ’26 this March 16–20 in Dana Point, California. LSI USA ‘26 is already ramping up, and today we’re showcasing the innovators from around the globe who are selected to present in Dana Point, California next March 16-20. Today we’re showcasing: 1. Christopher HaigEfemoral Medical → Developing a next-generation drug-eluting bioresorbable scaffold for the treatment of PAD. Using a minimally invasive procedure, the Efemoral Vascular Scaffold System is inserted into the leg and expanded inside the artery to restore a channel for blood flow to the foot. The scaffold is strong enough to hold the vessel open, is flexible enough to accommodate the complex skeletal motion of the leg, and elutes a drug to prevent scarring inside the vessel which leads to the need for repeat procedures. The scaffold is naturally absorbed by the body over time, thus leaving behind no permanent implant. 2. Lars Yang — magAssist → Developing advanced solutions for heart failure treatment and circulatory support. Its portfolio includes an interventional artificial heart for PCI procedure protection, which has received U.S. FDA Breakthrough Device Designation, as well as a high-flow, long-duration extracorporeal magnetic levitation heart for acute cardiogenic shock and a magnetic levitation ECMO system. Through its innovations, the company is working to expand treatment options for patients with severe cardiac conditions. 3. Brian McVerry, Ph.D.Silq Technologies → Developing and commercializing an advanced zwitterionic surface-treatment technology that makes implantable and indwelling medical devices resistant to biofilm, encrustation, and protein adhesion, without the use of drugs. The company has partnered with leading OEMs and healthcare systems to integrate its unique bio-inspired chemistry platform across all implanted medical devices to improve patient outcomes and reduce device-related complications. The company’s proprietary Silq surface treatment - branded as ClearTract® for urinary catheters - has received FDA clearance and is supported by multiple clinical studies demonstrating reductions in infection and inflammation. We look forward to seeing these innovators take the stage! Interested in presenting at LSI USA ‘26? Apply for The Funding Fast Track program today while space is still available.
