Nine months ago I backed myself. I bought a ute, a DCP kit, grabbed my laptop and made the decision to go out on my own and build a geotechnical firm that does things differently, CLIENT FOCUSED, from the ground up. There have been many late nights of reports and admin, wondering if I made the right decision and whether the phone was ever going to ring. But it rang. This week I hit two huge personal milestones. We relocated the office to Marrickville, and finally got our ute-mounted, SPT capable Drill Rig on the road. Not just the fact that we did it, but what it means we can do now. I established SFGEO because I kept seeing the same issues, and I'm sure many of you have seen them too, the lack of support for younger staff, no proper infrastructure, and clients' projects being treated as transactions rather than the important milestones they actually are. That's what I want to change. Now that we have a proper base, the next goal is to bring on some undergrads or grads. Get their boots in the dirt, run the tests with them, teach them how to make the calls on site and then show them how it translates into the report. That's how it should work. With the new setup, that's exactly what we're planning to do. I never want SFGEO to be a massive company, I want it to keep to its roots of family owned, locally based, and FULLY INDEPENDENT. That way when you choose SFGEO as your geotechnical consultancy, you know the advice and drilling services we provide is because we care about your project and not because we have to keep our board rich. Nine months in and we've decide to make some changes. Solid Foundation Geotechnical now have more capabilities so we can cover more of Sydney. We started SFGEO with a goal of keeping it local, keeping it independent, and make sure we aren't just here to deliver some fancy, technical report. Instead we are here to be your project partner. This week officially, we have MOVED, we have ADDED and we have UPGRADED to make that vision a reality. New Office - Marrickville (Coffee Capital, reporting for duty) We've officially set up at Suite 3.01, 107 Sydenham Road, Marrickville. Combined with our existing Parramatta base, we can seamlessly mobilise from the East and Inner West right through to the North and West — full Sydney coverage, without the delays. In-House 4WD Drill Rig - SPT & DCP Capable Its not just about drilling holes, our new ute-mounted rig brings SPT capabilities in a mobile package. We also keep a DCP kit to make sure all in-situ testing is covered. Now whether its a complex commercial project or residential job, we can get more data without the cost of floating in oversized specialised rigs when they aren't needed. This expanded capacity also means we can offer reliable subcontract drilling and field support to our fellow geotechnical and environmental consultancies across Sydney. Engineer Operated This is our real differentiator. The rig is operated directly by a Geotechnical Engineer. The same person pulling samples and running the tests is the one classifying the profile and writing your final report. Cleaner data, sharper foundation design inputs, and no lost-in-translation moments between the driller and the desk. I can’t reiterate enough how satisfying it is to help clients get a very important step closer to living in their future home. Having your foundations designed and constructed correctly is essential for any project to move forward with confidence. At SFGEO | Solid Foundation Geotechnical I wanted to make sure that we aren’t just a team that helps ticks a box for certifiers, rather, we get involved and hands on from preliminary works through to the finished slab. Today the home owner came and thanked me because, saying they were so lost before we jumped on board and was at the point of giving up on the build before our initial consultation. They had no idea what a pile was, and their contractors were overwhelming and pressuring them but we stepped in and took the lead. It made me so happy to know that I could put them at ease, liaise with contractors on their behalf and keep them informed and on track the whole way along. That’s the difference I wanted to make and am glad we are on the right track!

On drawings, plans and projected schedules getting your slab right is easy, in reality it there are a lot more hiccups. I came to site today to check out some piers, but ended being the foreman cause all the labourers are out, and we have rain tomorrow and for several days and we need concrete in asap! I don’t leave you hanging and wondering what to do next. That’s the difference I wanted to make when I established SFGEO | Solid Foundation Geotechnical.
