The Legislative Policy Platform Task Force took the first step in formulating SEMCOG's next policy platform. Over the coming months, the task force will meet two additional times to discuss issues facing local communities and nonpartisan policies for Southeast Michigan to be advocated for in Lansing and Washington. Romulus Mayor Robert McCraight serves as the chair of the task force, with Scott Benson, City Councilmember, City of Detroit serving as Vice Chair.

The Transportation Coordinating Council gathered on July 15, with local and regional leaders came together to discuss Southeast Michigan's transportation system with the goal — on local and regional levels — of broadening perspectives; aligning initiatives; improving project coordination and enhancing regional outcomes through transportation planning.

The passage of the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act highlights the value of incentive-based housing policy. Its collaborative approach aligns with Michigan's proposed MI Home Program, which SEMCOG supports as a way to help expand housing opportunities through partnership.

Local leaders are invited to join the Southeast Michigan Opioid Settlement Cohort Gathering on August 7. Connect with peers and explore strategies to maximize the impact of opioid settlement funding in our communities. Register by July 27.

SEMCOG thanks Governor Gretchen Whitmer for vetoing House Bill 6058, which would have posed substantial administrative and financial challenges for Michigan communities by requiring the retroactive implementation of new health insurance contribution requirements across multiple fiscal years. Her decision protects local governments and educational institutions from unnecessary disruption and significant unbudgeted costs. https://lnkd.in/gh2f7y6Z

We'd like to thank everyone who came out to our Member Meetup on July 9 at Oakland Community College's Culinary Arts Institute. Attendees got a tour of the brand new $74 million three-floor expansion home to the most up-to-date culinary learning facility in Southeast Michigan. The City of Southfield has approved a $65.1 million project to transform the former Blue Cross Blue Shield campus on 11-mile road into a spirited mixed-use community. This new collective will aid owners and tenants in a variety of ways, including: - Expanding housing opportunities through a new mixed-use campus that serves many income levels - Reutilizing two towers while preserving and reengineering notable symbols of the area - Creating space for businesses that will serve residents and create easily accessible jobs - Providing housing that is affordable for many middle-income workforce households, including teachers, nurses, first responders, skilled tradespeople, barbers and cosmetologists, and commercial drivers Learn more about the project: https://bit.ly/4w3XHP6
