🌊 We have a winner! Our first Where's the Monk contest asked one question: where would Seatrec's infiniTE™ float — The Monk — surface on July 5, 2026, at 11:59 PM PDT? The Monk surfaced at 38.5626°N, 50.6690°W after riding the Gulf Stream's eddies and meanders. Predictions landing within 100 km were genuinely hard — only 4 entries managed it. 🏆 Congratulations to José Manuel Echevarría Rubio, PhD Candidate in Marine Sciences at CENTRO INTERDISCIPLINARIO DE CIENCIAS MARINAS CICIMAR, whose prediction landed just 52 km away — closest of all!  🥈 Honorable mention to Ruoying (Roy) He and the Fathom Science team at North Carolina State University, whose prediction also landed within 100 km — along with two other entrants.  The top four entries spanned from Mexico, France, and both coasts of the U.S. — all from impressive oceanographers. The underwater autonomy space continues to gain strategic momentum. Thales’s $4.5 billion acquisition of Exail is another clear signal of consolidation in ocean tech and maritime robotics. 🌊 Big news from Seatrec! Seatrec has been selected as a DEVELOP Phase winner in the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Powering the Blue Economy™: Power at Sea Prize, earning a $75,000 award. In partnership with ASL Environmental Sciences, we’re integrating the AZFP-pico Acoustic Zooplankton Fish Profiler onto Seatrec’s thermal-powered infiniTE™ float to measure vertical profiles of zooplankton and mesopelagic biomass through the water column. Why does this matter? Zooplankton and mesopelagic organisms are central to the biological carbon pump, but their daily vertical behavior is difficult to observe continuously, at depth, and over long periods. Seatrec’s infiniTE™ float converts ocean temperature gradients into electricity, enabling long-endurance missions with profiling as frequently as every few hours. Paired with the AZFP-pico’s quantitative biomass assessment and an integrated conductivity, temperature, and depth (CTD) sensor, this combination delivers high-frequency, long-duration observations that ocean science has not had before. “Measuring vertical profiles of zooplankton has been a dream for oceanographers,” explains Yi Chao, Ph.D., Seatrec’s founder and CEO. “Advancing to the DEVELOP Phase, and doing so alongside ASL Environmental Sciences, we are closer than ever to filling one of the most critical knowledge gaps in ocean science.” This award builds on our CONCEPT Phase win in November 2024 and marks another step toward persistent, autonomous observation of the deep ocean. A gray whale found dead near San Francisco’s Pier 80 was killed by a vessel strike, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The whale is the 13th gray whale found dead in the Bay Area this year. The reported cause was blunt force trauma consistent with a ship strike.
