The new 2026-31 strategy from UK Research and Innovation highlights the vital connections between research, development, and innovation (RDI), and economic, social, environmental, and cultural benefit. Echoing longstanding advice from the RSB on strategic coordination to tackle challenges for society, the strategy also reflects our calls for community engagement, providing a rationale for recent Research Council funding announcements, and embedding transparency in future planning.   For the bioscience community, this new strategy provides an opportunity to strengthen the pipeline from research to real-world impact. World-leading bioscience RDI is essential to advancing global One Health outcomes, responsibly progressing resilience, sustainability, and security, supporting wellbeing, and driving growth across the UK. RSB welcomes the recognition that sustained investment in RDI must include support to discovery and curiosity-driven research, alongside targeted support such as to priority Industrial Strategy growth-driving sectors, including the life sciences. Investment across the imperative elements of RDI infrastructure, workforce, and communication, signals the UK's international standing and attractiveness as a trusted, globally competitive partner for RDI.   The strategy's emphasis on partnership is encouraging. We are supporting this through our first RSB Pulse Survey. This is collecting views on research funding, from those working in and with research organisations, to help ensure the community's experiences and priorities are heard as part of this ongoing dialogue, at the highest levels of Government and UKRI. Calling all secondary school teachers! Have you signed up to the Biology Week Spelling Bee yet? Literacy is a key factor in an individual’s success in science exams. When learning science, students encounter a huge number and variety of new words, that aren't commonly used outside of science classrooms. This competition allows them to practice accurate spelling of those words. The competition, organised by Mr J Hale and supported by RSB grant funding, is fully adaptable to support your students and maximise uptake. Key things to note: - The competition is open to all secondary school students across the UK, Channel Islands, and Isle of Man. - If you are based a little further afield your students are welcome to take part but are not eligible for physical prizes. - It begins in late September, with an asynchronous final during Biology Week on Friday 16 October. - Final registration will close on 16 September.
