There are projects that change communities—and there are projects that change how we think about housing. Fraser Square is one of those projects. I’m honored to be joining SEMCOG’s Housing Series next week with Mayor Valerie Kindle to share how the former Grosse Pointe Poupard School is being transformed into 71 attainable homes for families earning 60%–120% of Area Median Income. Alongside leaders from HUD, MSHDA, LISC, and local government, we’ll discuss the financing tools and partnerships needed to address Michigan’s housing shortage. I’m especially grateful to Robertson Brother Homes for bringing Renovare Development into this partnership. As an 80-year-old Michigan homebuilder, Robertson Brothers brought decades of expertise in homebuilding, construction, financing, operations, and delivering quality neighborhoods at scale. If we’re serious about increasing housing production, we need to continue activating and partnering with Michigan’s homebuilders. They have the experience, capacity, and market knowledge to help deliver the housing our communities are asking for. I’m equally grateful to Mayor Valerie Kindle and the City of Harper Woods. From financing and approvals to community engagement, the City championed this redevelopment every step of the way. This is what a true public-private partnership looks like. After nearly 30 years working in housing, I can honestly say the Missing Middle Housing Program is one of the most effective homeownership tools I’ve seen. As new housing policies continue to expand rental opportunities, we also need to remain committed to creating attainable homeownership. Everywhere I go, local communities are asking for more starter homes, missing middle housing, and workforce homeownership opportunities. Finally, thank you to SEMCOG for leading this housing series. Education is one of the most powerful housing tools we have. The more we help local leaders understand today’s housing realities—and the partnerships required to deliver housing—the better equipped we’ll be to remove barriers and create solutions.
