About us

At Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI), we exist to inspire and enable life outside for everyone. We believe that it’s in the wild, untamed and natural places that we find our best selves, so our purpose is to awaken a lifelong love of the outdoors, for all. Since 1938, we have been your local outdoor co-op, working to help you experience the transformational power of nature. We bring you top-quality gear and apparel, expert advice, rental equipment, inspiring stories of life outside and outdoor experiences to enjoy alone or share with your friends and family. And because we have no shareholders, with every purchase you make with REI, you are choosing to steward the outdoors, support sustainable business and help the fight for life outside. So whether you’re new to the outdoors or a seasoned pro, we hope you’ll join us.

Congrats to our 2025 Anderson Award recipients! This week, nearly 200 honorees gathered in Seattle to get outside, give back, learn from one another and spend time connecting as a community. From stewardship projects across the Puget Sound to Co-op Fest and behind-the-scenes experiences, it was a chance to reflect, have some fun and celebrate the people who make our co-op stronger every day. Inspired by our founders, Lloyd and Mary Anderson, this is our highest honor at the co-op. For more than two decades, it has recognized those who show up for others, share what they know and make a difference in big and small ways. What makes it especially meaningful is that recipients are nominated by peers who know their impact best. Thank you to this year's recipients and those who came before them for blazing the trail and inspiring us all along the way.

Getting outside should feel like it belongs to everyone. That's why Pride at REI goes beyond products. Throughout June & beyond, stores across the country are hosting Pride runs, block parties and community events designed to bring people together outside. We're also proud to launch our 2026 Made with Pride collection featuring artwork by Alva Skog, and to spotlight LGBTQ+ owned and founded brands including tomboyx, Andie, Outside Safe Space, Farm to Summit and Swift Industries. Outside Days was more than an event. It was adventure, community and connection brought to life. From the Rooted Stage conversations and hands-on workshops to the energy at Camp Co-op and the REI Member Outpost, the weekend was full of connection, ideas and shared love for getting outside. Outside Days drew thousands to Denver for three days of music, movement and community and we’re proud to help make it happen alongside Capital One and Outside. Across live sets, film screenings, community runs and athlete conversations, there was a clear throughline: outdoor culture at its best looks like people showing up for each other and the outdoors. At Camp Co-op, we connected with members, partners and new faces, heard what’s inspiring people right now and shared ways we’re working to make it easier to get outside. Events like this matter. They bring together the full outdoor ecosystem and push all of us to think bigger about access, stewardship and the future of life outside. Thank you to everyone who joined us. Camp mug is full. This year, we partnered with Ambercycle to take a big step toward reducing our carbon footprint. We’re starting by making the switch to cycora® regenerated polyester made from textile waste. Over the next few years, we’ll continue working together to innovate our high-performance gear so we can make a real, lasting impact for our members and the outdoor industry as a whole. “We want to make our mark on the industry by creating the best outdoor gear possible while minimizing waste and environmental impact. That includes using materials like these that help reduce waste and carbon emissions ... By giving next-generation technologies a platform to grow and sharing what we learn, we can help make these solutions accessible to more brands and scale their impact." - Ajay Chadha, director of materials innovation at REI Co-op Brands. In 2025, the threats to our public lands were unprecedented but so were the actions of the co-op’s members, employees and community to protect them. From messaging representatives to mobilizing in our backyards, we made a difference together. But the fight isn’t over yet. Take a stand by visiting the link in our comments to continue to protect our public lands from threats like sell-offs and rollbacks. See how we put our commitments into action in our latest Impact Report: https://lnkd.in/eGVHGYmi
