India’s ash utilisation ecosystem today is being shaped not only by operational requirements, but also by increasingly structured regulatory mandates focused on utilisation efficiency, legacy ash clearance, and environmental accountability. The MoEF&CC ash utilisation guidelines have introduced defined timelines for thermal power plants based on their existing utilisation levels, while also mandating progressive utilisation of legacy ash accumulated over the years. The guidelines also place accountability across the ecosystem, including thermal power plants, transporters, and user agencies through financial penalties linked to non-compliance and delayed utilisation. As ash generation continues to increase alongside India’s growing power and infrastructure demand, efficient ash management is becoming increasingly important from both an operational and regulatory perspective.
