How long does it take for a great idea to truly catch on? I’ve always believed that electric vehicles are the future. Back in 2022, when Mercedes-Benz released the EQS, we thought it was a masterpiece and bought two for our fleet. The market, however, wasn't ready. They simply sat there. No one wanted to rent them. Frustrated, we sold one to cut our losses and placed the second on a long-term rental, from which it only recently returned to us. Upon return, the plan was simple: prep it for sale. Up to that point, the vehicle hadn't turned a profit—it had only managed to break even. Then, the unexpected happened. Because the car had checked back into our system, our website automatically reopened bookings. Within a single week, it was booked solid for the next two months. It took almost five years, but the market finally caught up to the tech. Mercedes-Benz famously wavered on the future of their EV lineup due to slow initial adoption, yet here we are in 2026 seeing a massive surge in popularity. Human psychology is fascinating. I am asked a lot about how I approach vehicle purchases. If you aren't leasing, the goal is simple: Minimize depreciation. Here is my behind-the-scenes "smart buy" framework for 2026: Custom Spec > Dealer Stock: Never buy what’s sitting on the lot. Order your vehicle with an individual spec. You avoid paying for features you don't need and ensure the car has the "must-haves" for future resale. The "Northern" Resale Kit: If you're up north, think ahead. Black-on-black, winter package, running boards, and large wheels are non-negotiable for resale value. Pro tip: If it has a third row, ensure the second row has captain’s chairs. Timing the Model Cycle: Always check for upcoming refreshes. If you buy a new model in Spring 2026, it’s often titled as a 2027. That is essentially one year of free depreciation. The AI Advantage: Dealers disclose rebate info. Before you sign, ask an AI agent to pull current manufacturer rebates for that specific make and model. Knowledge is leverage. 3 Designs, 2 Builds, 1 App: Why we refused to settle. They say "move fast and break things," but at RealCar, we prefer "move precisely and build it right." We just released our new mobile app, but the journey to the App Store wasn't a straight line. It was a 4-year masterclass in why design and user experience (UX) trump everything else. The "Almost" Apps Our path to this release was paved with versions that never saw the light of day: Version 1: We transitioned from external contractors to a full-time internal dev team. To do it right, we had to rebuild our entire infrastructure from scratch. By the time the foundation was ready, the original design already felt like a relic of the past. Scrapped. Version 2: We hired a new designer to refresh the app and our website. We coded the app and updated the site, only to see our vitals plummet. Customers stopped navigating. The "vision" wasn't converting. Even though the app was finished, we knew we couldn't release it. Scrapped. The Turning Point We realized that a premium car rental service needs more than just "pretty" screens—it needs a seamless ecosystem. We brought on a new lead designer who actually listened. He took our original RealCar DNA, heard our concerns about the previous failures, and reinterpreted our vision into something better than we imagined. He didn't just design an app; he built an ecosystem. Why bother with an app? In a world where every business is fighting for web traffic and SEO rankings, an app is a bold choice. We know that keeping users on our website helps us rank higher. However, RealCar is about the client experience. For our existing clients, this app isn't about "traffic"—it’s about convenience. It’s about making your next premium rental as effortless as unlocking your own car.
