Creating a smarter and more sustainable world by using RAIN technology to connect trillions of everyday items

About us

The RAIN Alliance unites 200+ global organizations to drive universal adoption of RAIN RFID. Serving as the collective voice of the industry, the Alliance influences policy and drives regulatory progress to realize a world where every item connects to the Internet of Things using RAIN technology. RAIN (also known as UHF RFID) is a standards-based wireless technology built on the ISO/IEC 18000-63 protocol that enables businesses and consumers to identify, locate and authenticate billions of items connected to the Internet of Things, helping organizations improve traceability, effectiveness, and sustainability.

  • ⏰ The countdown to RAIN in Action is on, and we couldn't be more excited for the conversations ahead — starting with a preview from our sponsors of the big questions they're tackling. In this feature, Juho Partanen, VP of Market Transformation at Impinj, reflects on RAIN RFID's long game: the road from retail success to true ubiquity, where every item — every blister pack, surgical instrument, carton of strawberries, and bottle of Rioja — carries a digital identity that can be read, traced, and acted upon at every step. Two decades of retail deployments proved RAIN RFID works and can scale, but as Juho points out, that was the easier part. Sectors like food, pharma, and healthcare aren't inheriting a pre-tagged supply chain; they're building tagging programs and reader infrastructure from the ground up. In this piece, he discusses the real barriers to getting to ubiquity, alongside the powerful accelerants pulling RAIN forward. His core message: ubiquity isn't an accident. It's the outcome of deliberate choices being made right now. A big thank you to Impinj for being a RAIN in Action sponsor and helping drive these conversations forward. 🙏 📖 Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/gF_PDNu6 Want more insights like this — live and in person? • The language of circular fashion is everywhere. The infrastructure to back it up is still being built, and RAIN RFID is showing promise as part of that foundation. In this recent article, Samin Aayanifard from RAIN Alliance member Impinj examines what the early evidence from sortation pilots and recycling trials actually tells us, and is honest about what still needs to happen. The results so far are encouraging! 🎉 Sortation pilots by Avery Dennison with TEXAID demonstrated near-perfect identification accuracy — including for black garments and mixed fibres that challenge optical systems — and dramatic reductions in scanning labour. Mechanical and chemical recycling trials, including work by Primo1D and Avery Dennison, found that thoughtfully integrated RAIN tags are compatible with recycling processes, with no trace of tag components in finished recycled material. But getting to scale requires the industry to move together — brands committing to embedded tagging, technology providers delivering lifecycle-ready tags, and sorters and recyclers aligning on the data they need. The evidence base is building. The infrastructure is being laid. 👉 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gsE3ieJ3 #RAINAlliance #RAINRFID #Textiles #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #Recycling #DigitalProductPassport #Fashion

  • Exciting news from RAIN Alliance member Checkpoint Systems, who have just introduced READFINITY® — a next-generation all-in-one RAIN RFID reader family built for the modern retail environment. READFINITY® reads RAIN RFID tags at ultra-fast speeds, processes data in real time directly on the device, and integrates seamlessly with existing POS infrastructure and self-checkout kiosks — improving inventory accuracy, strengthening loss prevention, and accelerating checkout without the need to overhaul existing infrastructure. A great example of the continued innovation happening across the RAIN ecosystem. 👉 Learn more! https://lnkd.in/gvZqMjTi #RAINAlliance #RAINRFID #RetailTech #InventoryManagement #Innovation

Looking for a good weekend read? This new report from the ASHP Foundation makes a compelling case for where RAIN RFID in healthcare is heading. It is moving beyond isolated use cases toward enterprise-wide infrastructure spanning inventory, automation, and patient care workflows. The greatest value, as this report makes clear, comes not from counting inventory but from the data-driven decisions that RAIN RFID makes possible: improving patient safety, compliance, and operational efficiency. Two themes stand out. First, interoperability is the foundation for scaling RAIN RFID beyond single-purpose deployments, and proprietary systems that create vendor lock-in are a significant long-term risk, particularly as pharmaceutical manufacturers increasingly ship products with pre-applied RAIN RFID tags. Second, upstream tagging at the manufacturer or wholesaler level is consistently identified as the most scalable long-term strategy. Health systems that invest in flexible, standards-based RAIN RFID strategies today will be best positioned to reduce costs, meet regulatory demands, and enable safer, more connected patient care. 👉 https://lnkd.in/enpkcwcc #RAINAlliance #RAINRFID #Healthcare #PatientSafety #Pharmacy #Interoperability #SupplyChain

  • Congratulations to RAIN Alliance member XERAFY! Their smart RAIN RFID labels for pharmaceutical and healthcare packaging will be featured by AIPIA on the Innovation Stage at CPHI 2026, taking place 8–10 July in Bangkok. • ✨ We're getting excited about the conversations and insights coming to RAIN in Action this September, and thanks to our sponsor TSC Auto ID Technology we have a preview of what some of that might look like. In this feature, TSC explores the strategic evolution of RAIN RFID — the shift from isolated point solutions and data silos to connected, enterprise-wide ecosystems. TSC lays out what it takes to scale successfully: prioritizing open standards from GS1 and ISO, treating hardware as an integration project rather than a one-off rollout, and partnering with solution enablers that connect tag encoding, printing, mobile capture, and infrastructure into systems like ERP, WMS, and MES — where the data can actually drive decisions. 📖 Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/dbH_D4Fr Want more insights like this — live and in person? • The fashion industry generates 92 million tonnes of waste every year, and product traceability is one of the most powerful tools the industry has to address it. Regulators are taking note: the EU’s Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) will require every garment sold in the EU to carry a Digital Product Passport (DPP), and California’s Responsible Textile Recovery Act (SB 707) is setting similar expectations in the US. The moment to start preparing is now. In this guest article for GO TRACE - More Traceability, for Responsible Fashion, RAIN Alliance President Aileen Ryan explores why RAIN RFID is uniquely well-positioned to serve as the data carrier of choice for textile Digital Product Passports — and why the infrastructure many retailers need may already be closer than they think. 👉 https://lnkd.in/gabn3hFK #RAINAlliance #RAINRFID #DigitalProductPassport #DPP #Textiles #Fashion #ESPR #Circularity #Sustainability

The regulatory framework is moving fast. This edition covers Shein's €22M fine, the first DPP pilots from Lindex, Salsa Jeans and Patagonia, a new Chinese law that directly conflicts with EU transparency rules, and why 37% of clothing labels got their fibre composition wrong. Plus a guest article by Aileen Ryan (RAIN Alliance) on the missing link between physical products and digital passports. Summer format: twice a month, just the essentials.
