🎉 Exciting news for the Earth science community! 🌎 🛰️ NASA has awarded a new Commercial Satellite Data Acquisition (CSDA) contract, expanding the agency's ability to leverage innovative commercial Earth observation capabilities that complement NASA and partner observations. Through this award, NASA will continue to identify, evaluate, and acquire commercial satellite data that support scientific research, applications, and decision-making across a wide range of Earth system disciplines. These providers represent a diverse portfolio of commercial capabilities, including optical imagery, hyperspectral sensing, synthetic aperture radar (SAR), thermal infrared observations, greenhouse gas monitoring, GNSS radio occultation, GNSS reflectometry, and microwave sounding. Together, they will help expand access to critical Earth observation data supporting research and applications related to climate, disasters, water resources, agriculture, ecosystems, weather, and environmental monitoring. The CSDA Program remains committed to providing the scientific community with access to high-quality commercial datasets while fostering collaboration between NASA and the rapidly evolving commercial Earth observation sector. PlanetiQ is excited to continue supplying the highest-SNR GNSS-RO data commercially available to the NASA CSDA program and to expand our offerings to include polarized radio occultation (PRO) and grazing reflection data.
NASA has selected eight new companies and will acquire new data products from six existing Commercial Satellite Data Acquisition contract holders as it expands the range of commercial satellite data available to researchers, civil agencies, and decision-makers. The agency said the commercial measurements are intended to supplement NASA’s Earth-observing satellites by providing higher-resolution and more frequent observations. The awards fall under the Commercial Satellite Data Acquisition Program On-Ramp 2 Multiple Award contract, described by NASA as a firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity multiple-award contract. NASA said the original maximum contract value was US$476 million, with a performance period that began in 2023 and runs through Nov. 15, 2028. Last week I had the opportunity to join an outstanding panel at the 2026 Space Economy Summit Europe, organized by The Economist. The session focused on a question that will define the next decade of space infrastructure: who builds and occupies the next generation of orbital stations? The conversation on "Orbit as Infrastructure" brought together an awesome lineup: Adrian Mora Boluda (ISS/Columbus flight operations director, German Aerospace Center (DLR)), Shelley Thomas (VP, private crew recruitment, Vast), Dr Meganne Christian FRAeS (ESA reserve astronaut and senior exploration manager, UK Space Agency), and Ollie Martin (Senior editor, The Economist). A few themes that stood out: 1. Demand must be earned, not assumed. The orbital economy will be built on proven use cases, not aspiration. From our portfolio, PlanetiQ already has NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, the United States Department of the Air Force, and the United States Space Force as paying customers and Outpost has $33M+ in United States Department of War contracts and a NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration partnership for cargo return. 2. A huge missing link is the return trip. In-orbit manufacturing only works economically when getting things (not just data) back to Earth is affordable. That's the problem Outpost is solving, and why SpaceX's down-mass capabilities underpin the whole ecosystem. 3. Sovereign customers anchor everything. Governments will fund the first generation of commercial stations, just as they funded ISS. Proteus Space and PlanetiQ are already capturing that demand. The Summit reinforced what Craig Cummings and I see clearly at Moonshots Capital: the infrastructure layer of the space economy is being built now, and the investment decisions made in the next few years will shape access to low Earth orbit for decades to come.
