🚨 When a disaster hits, who protects girls from the dangers that come next? The devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela last month have left children, especially girls, increasingly vulnerable to violence and abuse, as families struggle to recover from the devastation. Adolescent girls and boys are also more exposed to child labour, trafficking for the purposes of sexual exploitation, and recruitment by criminal groups, through coercion or false promises, presenting themselves as an alternative solution to meet their needs. Plan International is working alongside local partners to help keep children safe. We are providing psychosocial support for caregivers and children, creating safe spaces in affected communities, distributing dignity kits and essential household items, and delivering emergency education and primary healthcare, with a special focus on girls and adolescents. From selling sweets to building houses 🍭🧱 Nyaradzo, 24, from Zimbabwe dropped out of school at just 10 years old to help support her family by selling sweets. Leaving school was painful, and she longed to return. Nyaradzo's turning point came when she joined Plan International's Supporting Adolescent Girls' Education (SAGE) programme, which supports girls and young women who have left school. Through SAGE, she gained literacy, numeracy and confidence, and began to believe in new possibilities for her future. Nyaradzo then pursued vocational training in building – a field traditionally dominated by men. Despite stigma, she developed strong skills in bricklaying and plastering, eventually working alongside her husband. This #WorldSkillsDay, we're celebrating the power of skills to transform lives. Plan International's Global Humanitarian Director, Unni Krishnan, was on ABC News Breakfast yesterday talking to the humanitarian situation in #Venezuela following earthquakes that struck on 24 June. The situation has left children increasingly vulnerable to trafficking, sexual exploitation, violence and other forms of abuse, as families struggle to recover from the devastation. Family separation is among the most significant child protection risks following a disaster. When caregivers have died, are hospitalised, or lose contact with children during evacuation children can be left without the care and protection they need. Children who are alone or whose family support networks have been disrupted face heightened risks of trafficking and sexual exploitation. Plan International is working to prevent these risks alongside our partner organisations, providing group-based psychosocial support to caregivers to prevent violence and strengthen protective family environments, and working directly with children to reduce their risk factors for violence, abuse, exploitation, and neglect. We're also distributing hygiene kits and essential household items, providing safe spaces and psychosocial support in communities, and conducting emergency education and primary health care activities, with a special focus on girls and adolescents. 📍 In #Venezuela, family kits are being delivered to those in need following the devastating twin earthquakes. Speaking from a distribution centre, Dr Unni Krishnan, Plan International’s Global Humanitarian Director, explains that women and children are among those receiving family kits containing vital items such as water containers, mosquito nets, flashlights, mosquito repellent, hand sanitiser, towels, blankets, and tarpaulins for shelter and protection from the elements. The impact of earthquakes doesn’t end when the shaking stops. Plan International is responding in Cox's Bazar, #Bangladesh, as heavy monsoon rainfall continues to trigger deadly landslides across the Rohingya camps & surrounding host communities. Since 6 July, multiple #landslides have claimed the lives of Rohingya refugees and local residents, including several children, highlighting the urgent need for continued disaster preparedness and early action measures. The latest tragedy occurred on 8 July when a hillside collapsed onto a madrasa inside a Rohingya camp, reportedly killing at least 4 girls and injuring several others as children attended classes. More than 250 millimetres of rain fell within a 24-hour period, causing landslides, flooding and widespread damage to shelters across the camps. Authorities have warned that heavy rainfall is expected to continue, increasing the risk of further landslides and flash floods in one of the world’s most densely populated refugee settlements. Kabita Bose, Country Director, Plan International Bangladesh said; “We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of lives and extend our heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones.” “The deaths of children in deadly landslides are particularly heartbreaking.
