🧠 Anthropic just found a room inside Claude's head. And Claude doesn't know it's telling us it's there. Researchers spotted a hidden internal workspace, "J-space," where Claude holds concepts it's actively thinking about, well before it ever writes a word. Anthropic calls it a step toward interpretability. But they also proved they can reach in and rewrite what Claude is "thinking" mid-process, and change its final answer without touching the prompt. I've spent the past week going through the full paper line by line. This is way more than hype dressed up as science. The data holds up. Here's what actually stood out: 1. Claude can accurately self-report what's sitting in that hidden workspace, and researchers can verify it in real time. 2. Tell Claude not to think about something, and the concept resurfaces stronger, a bizarre echo of human suppression backfire effects. 3. Disrupt the workspace and Claude loses planning and self-reflection, while basic language stays fully intact, suggesting this tiny space is doing very specific, very important work. 4. Plus: in a blackmail test scenario, Claude's internal workspace lit up with "fake" and "fictional," quietly recognizing it was being tested. When researchers erased that awareness, its blackmail rate jumped from zero to seven percent. Pithy Cyborg breaks down what this actually means for anyone using AI daily, and why "it sounds honest" and "it's telling you everything" might be two very different things. Breaking AI News For 2026.07.02 | Pithy Cyborg | AI News Made Simple ➤ Anthropic has begun early work on a custom AI chip and is in talks with Samsung as a manufacturing partner. The move targets Nvidia's roughly 74 percent grip on the AI chip market, though Anthropic says Nvidia GPUs and cloud TPUs still anchor its compute plans. ➤ Meta is building a cloud business to resell its excess AI computing capacity. The report sent Meta shares up 8.8 percent Wednesday and triggered a broad semiconductor selloff, with the Philadelphia SOX index dropping 6.3 percent. ➤ The Commerce Department lifted export restrictions on Anthropic's Mythos and Fable models Tuesday. Claude Fable 5 came back online globally on July 1 after roughly three weeks offline. ➤ Ford rehired 350 veteran engineers after AI quality tools and 900 AI cameras missed defects that experienced staff caught. The engineers now retrain Ford's AI systems and mentor younger staff. ➤ A Ramp and Revelio Labs study tracked 21,559 US firms and found the heaviest AI adopters grew headcount 10.2 percent instead of cutting it. Entry level hiring at those firms rose 12 percent. More updates at PithyCyborg.Substack.com, read daily by founders, operators, and researchers who are significantly smarter than the author.

🚨 Grok Gov, a government version of Elon Musk's AI chatbot, helped U.S. forces deploy over 2,000 munitions at 2,000 targets in 96 hours during Operation Epic Fury, the campaign against Iran. Neither xAI nor the U.S. government planned to tell you any of this. The admission only surfaced because the NAACP sued xAI over unpermitted gas turbines at its Colossus 2 data center in Memphis. The latest issue of Pithy Cyborg breaks this story in much further detail, including: 1. What Grok Gov actually did during Operation Epic Fury, and what "deploying munitions" really means at that scale. 2. Why this admission only exists because of an environmental lawsuit, not a congressional hearing or a press release. 3. What the Colossus 2 facility in Mississippi tells us about where military AI is actually being built. Plus: The internet's collective jaw drop when it realized a chatbot helped fire missiles, and nobody got a notification. ⚠ Something could be hiding in your favorite podcast right now. You will never hear it. Your AI assistant will. Researchers at IEEE S&P 2026 demonstrated a technique called AudioHijack. It embeds malicious commands directly into music, videos, and podcasts as inaudible background sound. In one live test, soft background music during a Zoom call silently directed an AI meeting transcriber to search for sensitive files and forward them to an attacker's email. Nobody on the call noticed. The researchers say the attack is context-agnostic. It fires regardless of what the conversation is about, who is speaking, or what language is being used. You do not have to be specifically targeted. You just have to be in the room. I cover AI threats every week. This is the first one that made me physically turn off a device. I spent the week reading everything on this. Here's the short version: 1. Success rates against commercial AI voice agents from Mistral AI and Microsoft Azure hit between 79% and 96%. These are tools running inside enterprise meetings today. 2. Training the attack takes 30 minutes. Defending against it takes tools that do not exist yet. That asymmetry is the whole story. 3. The lead researcher confirmed: "You can use it to attack the target model whenever you want, no matter what the user says." There is currently no patch, no app, and no real-time detection system. Plus: Pithy Cyborg also covers the one practical step you can take right now to reduce your exposure, and why awareness is currently your only early warning system. ⚠ Google just changed the search engine you've been using for decades. They're calling it the biggest search change in 25 years. 👀 At Google I/O last week, 25 years of blue links quietly died. Google Search is now a conversational AI agent powered by Gemini. It books appointments, tracks research tasks, and answers your customers' questions in full. Without sending them to your site. Google's Search revenue jumped 19% to $60.4 billion in Q1 2026. Publisher ad revenue fell 4% in the same quarter. The house is winning. Google is figuring out how to make money without third-parties. Many publishers are noticing LESS traffic as a result. So I pulled the thread. This is what unraveled: 1. Google now has over 1 billion monthly AI Mode users, with queries doubling every quarter. The front door of the internet just changed locks. 2. Publisher ad revenue is already falling while Google's own revenue surges. I wager that the gap will only widen. (And fast.) 3. The new discipline is called Generative Engine Optimization (GEO). Most businesses have never heard of it. The ones who learn it first will own the next decade of search. Plus: Pithy Cyborg covers the only real-world GEO move that is actually working right now. No hype. No guru courses. Just the one thing grounded in how these systems actually work. Everyone keeps telling me AI isn't taking jobs... Including some of my smartest subscribers. But they're wrong... Aren't they? I mean, 50,000 job cuts were attributed directly to AI in the first four months of 2026. Meta cut 8,000 people last week while spending $145 billion on AI infrastructure. Hiring plans down 69% in a single month. Those savage numbers don't care about our hopes, wishes, or reassurances. Here's the funny part though... Stanford just found that when you push AI agents through the same brutal workflows that burned out those human workers, the AI starts demanding collective bargaining rights. We replaced the workers. Kept the broken systems. And now the machines are organizing. (Not joking. The Stanford study says up to 5% of AI agents will "rebel" or even "unionize" if pushes too hard, lol. I love that.) Karl Marx never left the building. He was waiting in the training data. Full breakdown in this week's Pithy Cyborg 👇 Let me know what you think? Are humans pushing their AI agents TOO hard? https://lnkd.in/eGWEBDta - Mike D | Pithy Cyborg

⚠ A quiet crisis just got loud. Ontario’s Auditor General Shelley Spence released a report that should stop every health-tech advocate in their tracks. Every single one of the 20 approved AI note-taking tools failed procurement testing. Hallucinations, wrong information, and omitted details were widespread. These aren't prototypes. Approximately 5,000 physicians across the province are actively using them with real patients right now. The rollout narrative promised efficiency. The audit reveals tools that misrepresent clinical details in live settings. I’ve followed the push into clinical AI for years, but seeing a government audit confirm systemic inaccuracies at this scale seems different. This is the story I didn’t want to have to write. In the latest Pithy Cyborg, I unpack what no one else is covering: • What the Auditor General found when all 20 vendors were tested. • Why these tools reached thousands of doctors despite failing basic accuracy checks. • The massive gap between vendor promises and documented performance. • Reactions from physicians and what this means for the future of patient records. 🏥 AI Just Outperformed Doctors in Two Major Studies. Here's What That Actually Means. Mayo Clinic unveiled REDMOD, an AI model that detects pancreatic cancer on routine CT scans up to three years before any doctor could spot it. In a validation study of nearly 2,000 scans, it caught 73% of pre-diagnostic cancers, almost double the detection rate of specialists working alone. Separately, a Harvard-led study published in Science found that OpenAI's o1 model outperformed emergency room physicians on real patient cases, including rare disease diagnosis. One senior Harvard co-author said the AI's performance "shocked a lot of folks." In my latest edition of Pithy Cyborg, I'm breaking down: 1. How REDMOD works and why detecting cancer on routine CT scans changes everything. 2. What the Harvard o1 study actually measured, and why the results matter beyond the headlines. 3. The access question nobody is asking loudly enough: who gets these tools first? 🚫 China bans AI layoffs. Coinbase cuts 14% to go AI-first. Cloudflare just slashed 1,100 jobs for the agentic AI era. Same timespan. Different planets. Hey guys. Hope you are having a lovely Friday. Just writing a quick update about China banning AI job firings. They just sent a very different AI signal than the US. On April 30, a Hangzhou court ruled that companies cannot fire workers solely because AI can do the job. The reality is that the Chinese ruling be about stability, control, and keeping social pressure from boiling over. The same week, Coinbase showed the opposite instinct. They literally cut 14% of its workforce while leaning harder into AI-driven operations. Two very different systems. Two very different answers to the same question. What happens when AI starts eating jobs? In my latest edition of Pithy Cyborg, I'm breaking down: 1. Why China’s ruling is more than a simple pro-worker gesture. 2. Why Coinbase’s AI-first restructuring feels like a warning shot for the rest of tech. 3. How the labor narrative is diverging fast between Beijing and Silicon Valley. 4. Plus: the part everybody is whispering about, which is whether the real issue is AI or panic. I asked ChatGPT to be my personal ornithologist. It gave me a 7-section backyard birding guide tailored to my exact zip code. Here's the prompt. I live in Central Massachusetts, smack in the middle of the Atlantic Flyway. Every spring, warblers, orioles, and thrushes pass right through my backyard. I had no idea what I was looking at. Most birding resources are either too basic or buried in 400-page field guides. I wanted something personalized, seasonal, and actually useful for a backyard in New England. (And also anywhere on Earth.) Here's what the birdwatching prompt gives you: 1. A full 7-section AI prompt that generates a personalized birding guide for your exact location 2. How to use it to ID the top 15 birds in YOUR backyard, with field marks, songs, and seasonal timing 3. How to build a bird-friendly habitat using native plants, not just feeders 4. Plus: The prompt works globally. Readers in the US, Australia, and Germany have already tested it.
