What a Bond Vote Actually Tests 🏫 People assume a bond referendum is a construction question. It's not. It's a trust question. At Westwood, our bond passage — the district's first in 43 years — didn't come down to blueprints or budgets. It came down to whether a community believed we'd tell them the truth about what they were being asked to fund, and whether we'd still be standing in front of them a year later saying the same things we said before the vote. A few things I learned along the way: ✅ The board and community can smell a sales pitch from a mile away — and they should. Trust gets built by over-communicating, not by managing the message. ✅ The hardest part isn't the "yes" vote. It's the eighteen months after, when every delay or change gets measured against what you promised. ✅ A facility decision is never really about the building. It's about whether people believe their kids are the reason for it. That's exactly why I do the work I do now with Performance Services. Their process starts the way every good bond conversation should — with a facility study or master plan that gives a board real answers before anyone asks a community for a vote. And because their design and construction teams work under a single contract, with a no-change-orders guarantee and performance assurance that continues well past the ribbon-cutting, the promise a board makes to voters is one they can actually keep.
