It feels like the perfect time to reflect! Nearly a year ago, we launched our Product Specification Management Platform and the journey since has exceeded expectations. In that short time, Opal has already helped private brand retailers bring greater structure, visibility and control to their product development processes. From tighter compliance workflows to faster approvals and clearer collaboration across teams, the impact has been immediate and measurable. What’s been just as exciting is how much we’ve continued to learn, grow and innovate since the launch. We’ve been able to evolve Opal even further, particularly through the advancement of our AI capabilities, allowing us to enhance and refine the platform even beyond our original vision. Once positioned as a cost-effective alternative to branded goods, private brand has evolved into a powerful brand engine in its own right. Today’s consumers don’t see private labels as “generic”, they see them as brands they trust, return to and recommend. That shift means that succeeding in private brand today requires the right systems, stronger supplier partnerships and connected processes behind the scenes. The retailers building lasting loyalty are investing in the infrastructure that protects quality, ensures transparency and safeguards the brand promise at scale. Following the Prime Label Consultants Inc Food Label Conference in Washington DC last week, several clear themes emerged across the evolving US food labeling and regulatory landscape. Across Front-of-Pack labeling, allergen management, ingredient transparency and growing state vs federal divergence, one message came through consistently: ⚠️ Regulation is moving quickly, but the real challenge for retailers and manufacturers lies in how product information is managed behind it. Whether responding to new labeling requirements, navigating increasingly fragmented legislation, improving ingredient transparency, or managing evolving allergen expectations, organisations need greater visibility and control over their product information. The common thread across these discussions was clear: compliance is becoming increasingly dependent on the quality, accessibility and governance of product data. As regulatory requirements evolve, organisations need confidence in: ✅ What is in their products ✅ Where that information originates ✅ Which suppliers are involved ✅ Which packaging and claims may be impacted by change When product information is fragmented across multiple systems, responding to change becomes slow and complex. When information is connected, trusted and accessible, organisations are better positioned to adapt with speed and confidence. At Opal, we're closely tracking these developments and helping leading retailers strengthen control over product information across ingredients, suppliers, packaging, specifications and claims. If these topics are on your agenda, email us today: info@opalbpm.com

The Prime Label Consultants Inc Food Label Conference in Washington DC highlighted just how quickly the US food labeling and regulatory landscape continues to evolve. A number of topics came up regularly across the two day event. 👉 Front-of-Pack (FOP) Labeling While the FDA continues to evaluate FOP nutrition labeling, there remains uncertainty around what the final requirements will look like. Discussions suggested that the final approach could differ significantly from earlier proposals, creating challenges for manufacturers and retailers that may ultimately need to update packaging across large product portfolios. 👉 State vs Federal Regulation A recurring theme throughout the conference was the growing divergence between state and federal initiatives. While federal agencies continue to evaluate topics such as ultra-processed foods (UPFs), GRAS reform and nutrition labeling, individual states are already introducing legislation covering ingredients, labeling requirements and food restrictions. For organizations operating nationally, this creates an increasingly complex compliance environment. 👉 Ultra-Processed Foods and the GRAS Debate Despite the significant attention being given to ultra-processed foods and the so-called GRAS “loophole”, there is still considerable discussion around definitions, implementation and regulatory direction. The challenge for industry is preparing for change while many of the details are still being developed. 👉 The Future of Allergen Labeling Sessions covering FAO/Codex allergen thresholds highlighted the move towards more risk-based approaches to allergen management and precautionary allergen labeling. There was also significant discussion around how consumers interpret allergen information, the consistency of “Free From” claims and the balance between scientific accuracy and clear communication. As regulations continue to evolve, the ability to understand what is in a product, where that information originated and how changes are managed will only become more important. We're watching these developments closely at Opal and how retailers need to be prepared for these shifts that seem to keep evolving and changing as time goes on. If any of these points are on your agenda in the coming months, we would be keen to speak - please feel free to direct message Matt Mintman.

⚠️ EPR requirements across the US are continuing to evolve, and many retailers are now facing increasing pressure around packaging data quality and reporting readiness. One of the biggest challenges is simply having accurate, structured packaging specification data available in a consistent format across products and suppliers. At Opal BPM, we help retailers manage product and packaging specifications, including: ✅ Packaging materials and weights to support reporting calculations ✅ Clear management of primary, secondary and tertiary packaging ✅ Verified recycled content data aligned to sustainability and compliance claims That data can then support wider EPR reporting and compliance processes, alongside downstream reporting and financial systems. As more states introduce EPR legislation, many retailers are realising that compliance starts much earlier with structured product and packaging data. That’s why Opal brings together product specifications, supplier collaboration, packaging artwork workflows, packaging data and integrations in a single platform designed for private label retail. We recently analyzed the US food recall data published in Q1’26 by the FDA, and found that 31% of all recalls are due to undeclared allergens. Our findings highlighted a familiar pattern: undeclared allergens continue to drive recalls across everyday products. The root cause isn’t isolated errors, it’s inconsistent data across complex supply chains, where small gaps can quickly scale into bigger issues. Here, we break down why undeclared allergens are sill falling through the cracks and how private brands can reduce their exposure risk. Reduce your risk of recall and speak to our co-founder Matt Mintman for a live demo of the system 👉
