With America’s 250th anniversary just two days away, I’ve been reflecting on the generations of people whose vision, perseverance and ingenuity helped build this country and the energy systems that power it today. Spending time with our new intern class is one of the highlights of my year. This year, ONEOK welcomed more than 80 young professionals who will immerse themselves in the critical work we do day in and day out. As I shared with this year’s class, this industry runs on assets, but it is people who make decisions that determine how those assets function. It's where purpose, excellence, innovation and teamwork come together to deliver the energy that makes a difference in how the world moves ahead. Over the course of my 45-year career, I've worked for eight different companies, yet I can trace every meaningful milestone back to two things: 1) saying yes to opportunities that challenged me and 2) getting the opportunity to work with people who made me better, which is exactly what I asked our interns to do this summer. Be intentional about your personal growth and focus on building lasting relationships, because both will shape you into an insatiable learner, and ultimately, a better leader. I also stressed the importance of culture. Culture is a key differentiator for a company, and I believe culture shapes how we show up and get better over time. It's the thread that holds everything together. At ONEOK, we have six core values that are deeply interwoven throughout everything we do. And they are all connected. For example, you can't have excellence without innovation. You can't be truly safe without being ethical. And none of it works without a culture where people genuinely care about one another. So, thank you, intern class of 2026, for choosing to spend your summer with us. If my career has taught me anything, it's that the relationships you establish and the experiences you say yes to early on are the ones that shape everything after.
