Decarbonizing older multifamily buildings requires solutions designed for real-world structural and economic constraints. In NYC, buildings constructed before 1947 represent a significant share of the housing stock and often rely on aging steam or hydronic heating systems. These conditions make traditional heat pump retrofits costly, complex, and disruptive due to required electrical upgrades and installation challenges, particularly in dense multifamily and public housing settings. Through NYSERDA's Innovation & Research Program, Gradient was supported in developing a cold-climate window heat pump specifically designed to address these barriers. The technology provides an alternative pathway for electrification in space- and infrastructure-constrained buildings. This work reflects on NYSERDA's role in advancing a broader innovation ecosystem that supports the development, demonstration, and real-world deployment of clean energy technologies across New York State. ICYMI, community impact in Central Harlem!
Affordable housing starts long before construction begins. Getting families into new homes requires developers to secure sites, navigate rezoning, and obtain permits, steps that often stall due to a lack of early-stage capital. NY Green Bank is helping bridge that gap through its support of Marcus Garvey Village, two all-electric residential towers in Central Harlem that will deliver 122 fully affordable homes. Located in a Disadvantaged Community (DAC), the project combines affordable housing with high-performance building design, creating cleaner, more efficient homes while advancing New York’s climate and equity goals.

From wood 🪵to wind 💨, America's energy story has evolved for 250 years. What started with wood as the original fuel has shifted through coal, oil, natural gas, nuclear, hydropower, and now rapidly growing renewable energy like wind and solar. Each era reflects how the country adapted to new needs, new challenges, and new innovations - from the Industrial Age to today's modern clean energy transition. As we mark 250 years of the United States, we're looking at how far we've come, and how we’ll continue to evolve our clean energy transition. 🌟 Happy 250th America!

BIG solar news!🌞 Governor Kathy Hochul announced that 8 gigawatts (GW) of distributed solar has now been installed across New York State! That’s enough energy to power more than 1.3 million homes and businesses across New York – including disadvantaged communities. This milestone puts the state ahead of schedule for reaching 10 GW of distributed solar by 2030. There are more than 276,000 projects operating across the State, with another 2.7 GW in development. Solar can be built more quickly than other types of energy infrastructure and is among the most affordable ways to develop new generation. https://lnkd.in/dDYdz4ZJ

Pushing the Envelope?✉️ Summer or winter for your business, the building envelope holds the key to regulating the indoor climate (temperature control, air quality, etc.) and protecting against the outdoor environment (drafts, condensation, etc.). A building envelope is the physical barrier between a building's interior and the exterior. Often called the building’s "skin," it includes the roof, walls, foundation, windows, and doors. Don't overlook the significance of a well-designed and properly maintained building envelope. If you're struggling with temperature control, drafts, or condensation issues in your home, building, or business, take proactive steps to weatherize your property and optimize its envelope. 🏢Business and building owners: Completing an energy study of your building can help you identify and evaluate opportunities to reduce energy costs. https://lnkd.in/eu7yXbBm
