As more cities expand smoke free laws to include vaping, it’s clear that smoking policies are evolving. Dallas recently reported a 23% reduction in smoking and vaping after extending its indoor smoking ordinance to cover electronic smoking devices. For hotels, this reinforces an important reality. For decades, hotels had one primary way of identifying smoking in a guest room: Someone smelled it. Housekeeping became the "human smoke detector." If there was an odor, staff would try to document it, look for ashes or cigarette butts, and piece together enough evidence to determine what happened. But guest behavior has changed. Vaping has become more common. Cannabis laws continue to evolve. And often there's little—or no—physical evidence left behind by the time someone enters the room. 🚭 The old process simply wasn't designed for today's reality.
