Empowering families. Revitalizing neighborhoods.
About us
Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven's model for neighborhood revitalization is both holistic and unique. Our comprehensive approach of clustered affordable housing, homeownership education, community organizing, and commitment to green building and social justice empowers low- and middle-income people to become not only homeowners but vested stakeholders in their community. We have been serving the communities of New Haven for 38 years. NHS’ mission is to position neighborhoods to succeed by increasing and preserving homeownership; making homes beautiful, energy-efficient, and affordable; and helping residents take charge of their neighborhoods. Our affordable housing development is focused in Newhallville, the Hill, and Dwight/Edgewood neighborhoods of New Haven. Each year we rehabilitate up to 12 properties per year in our targeted neighborhoods, devote substantial community organizing efforts in these locations, and serve as many as 1700 clients from the Greater New Haven Area and the State of Connecticut looking to purchase a home or prevent a pending foreclosure.

We were honored to join our partners, Generation Power CT, at the The National Energy and Utility Affordability Coalition (NEUAC) Conference to share how collaboration can help Connecticut residents access healthier, more energy-efficient homes. Together, HomeEnergy ConneCT and Generation Power CT are helping families overcome barriers like mold, asbestos, and outdated equipment that often prevent them from qualifying for energy efficiency programs. By combining flexible funding with personalized energy counseling, we've helped unlock more than $154,000 in utility incentives and supported 73 projects across Connecticut. When one Connecticut family lost heat shortly after moving into their new home, they set out to find a safer, more energy-efficient solution, but instead encountered a maze of program barriers, financing challenges, and delays. With support from NHS of New Haven’s HomeEnergy ConneCT team and the Gas Assistance Program (GAP) (with Generation Power CT), they were finally able to install a heat pump and restore warmth to their home.
