A win! Thank you Senator Mitch McConnell for protecting and shepherding the #industrialhemp industry through Appropriations! The use of hemp #oilseed and #hempstalk across food and industrial applications requires far lower regulatory threshold, and this language takes the first steps to codify that. New West Genetics and other grain and fiber industry colleagues are heartened by this forward momentum. Changes: redefines "hemp" specifying that hemp includes Cannabis sativa L. with a total (THC) concentration of no more than 0.3%. It excludes certain products, like synthetic cannabinoids, thus ensuring safety and closing the loophole! The term "industrial hemp" is separately defined and protected to include hemp grown for: Stalk Use: The stalk of the plant, fiber or Hurd applications Seed Use: Whole grain, oil, cake, nut, hull, etc. derived from seeds. Edible Hemp Products: Microgreens, etc. Research Purposes: at institutions of higher education or independent research institutes. Viable Seeds: Seeds produced for manufacturing or producing materials described above. This summer's marginal land trial data is in- A third party conducted the trial, and New West Genetics #AMPLIFY hybrids achieved yields between 3200-3500 lbs/acre clean, despite facing hail damage more than once. With a seed oil content of 30%, the low end oil yield reaches 494 liters/acre, surpassing all other annual oilseeds. The sex-determining gene in Cannabis and Hops has been found - and sorry guys the Y chromosome isn't involved. A new preprint from a huge author list from HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology, University of Minnesota, Salk Institute for Biological Studies, New West Genetics, Cornell University and University of Colorado Boulder used deep sequencing to pinpoint the gene. Monoecious cannabis - which produces male and female flowers on the same plant - played a key role in this puzzle. These plants are all XX. The team outcrossed monoecious fiber/seed hemp and sequenced nearly 1000 F1 progeny in a massive undertaking to map the sex determining gene. The gene - ACS - is involved in ethylene biosynthesis and found on the X chromosome. Unlike other XY sex determination systems (like in humans), the sex determining gene is not on the Y chromosome and thus cannabis has a "background-Y" system, not an "active-Y" system. Of note, the cannabis/hops divergence date keeps getting pushed back and this study estimates it to be 36 to potentially 48 million years ago. #BetterCannabisThroughScience Link in comments
