I was recently asked a question that stopped me: "What's the difference between a dating app that says it's "inclusive" vs. one that actually is?" My answer: SAFETY INFRASTRUCTURE. Most dating platforms treat inclusivity as a marketing message: a rainbow logo in June; a checkbox for pronouns; maybe a blog post. But for LGBTQ+ daters, inclusivity without structural safety is just branding. The reality is sobering: → LGBTQ+ users face disproportionate rates of catfishing, harassment, doxxing, and hate-motivated violence on dating apps → Trans and nonbinary members carry the highest risk of being targeted by bad actors posing as matches → For many queer daters, being "visible" on a platform can cost them their job, their housing, or their safety (🫶💜I💙Y💚K💛Y🧡K🩷🫶) "Privacy and safety for this community aren't just feature preferences, they can determine whether someone keeps their job, their housing, or even their life." That line is from an article I co-authored with Sage Nestler, MSW, founder of Releasing the Phoenix, a queer holistic mental health organization, about what safer online dating should actually look like for LGBTQ+ folx in 2026.
