Booking Holdings is folding Booking.com, Agoda and Priceline into a single B2B wholesale engine — one pipe that resells hotel net rates into bank apps, airline checkouts and loyalty portals. Read it as "OTA gets bigger" and it's easy to shrug off. Read it for what it's actually doing and it's more interesting than that. Booking's core loop for a decade was simple: buy intent from Google, convert it on Booking.com. That loop is under real pressure for the first time — travelers are starting to plan trips in a chat window, and a chat window that answers "where should I stay in Milan" slots itself right between the traveler and Booking.com. So Booking is hedging. If the traveler-facing screen is up for grabs, own the supply behind whatever screen wins — a bank's app today, an AI agent booking on someone's behalf tomorrow. As the piece puts it, the same API that feeds a rewards portal now is what an agent plugs into next. Be the supplier to the disruption instead of its casualty. Smart, defensive, and hard to argue with as a strategy. It's also worth being clear-eyed about what it means if you're the hotel: your net rate reaching more shelves you can't see, sold under someone else's name, at someone else's take. Which is the same question it's always been, just with a new front door — do you want to supply the channel, or own it? One detail from Skift's testing of travel apps in AI assistants is worth calling out: Claude surfaced and used the connected apps with little friction, while ChatGPT kept bypassing ones that were already turned on. Same app, same brand, two assistants, two completely different outcomes. I'd be careful reading too much into a single round of testing; these behaviors shift month to month. And we've seen with our clients that once Claude turned on recommendations, it grew volume 60-100X overnight (so the shifts matter). But it points to something structural that isn't going away: your app isn't a placement on its own. It is a bet that each assistant decides to call it. And each one decides differently. "We launched on ChatGPT" isn't a strategy any more than "We have a website" was in 2005. The question is whether you show up reliably across every surface a traveler might start on and whether you'd even know if you didn't. That's the type of muscle worth building now as it will continue to be an important lever in how your brand shows up in ChatGPT and Claude. You can only learn if you're in the game. https://lnkd.in/ga5dN7_7
