Great to revisit this conversation from SSAC26! Thank you to John Park from the Dallas Cowboys and Seth Walder, Dean Oliver, Brian Burke, and Phil Orlins from ESPN for sharing such valuable insight on The Analytics Paradox, presented by ESPN. A few takeaways that stuck with us: 1️⃣ Optimization breeds homogeneity. When every team chases the same data-driven "correct" answer, strategic variety disappears, and the edge disappears with it. 2️⃣ Communication is the real edge. Data only matters if it's translated. The best analysts bridge the gap between complex models and the human decisions coaches and front offices actually make. 3️⃣ Context trumps universal models. There's no one-size-fits-all analytics playbook; elite organizations build strategy around their own personnel, not league-wide trends. Conversations like this are exactly what SSAC is all about.
