I’m often asked what the practical business benefit of accepting Bitcoin payments really is. We’re starting to get clear answers. After introducing Bitcoin payments, Steak ’n Shake reported a double-digit increase in same-store sales (between 15/18%) and around 50% savings on payment processing fees in just 9 months. Customers using Bitcoin tend to spend more and come back more often. What’s interesting is that Bitcoin didn’t replace cards. It simply added another option. That small change brought incremental demand and improved margins at the same time. This is why I believe early adopters in Europe have a real opportunity. At Mion, we enable Bitcoin payments that settle instantly in euros, reduce fees, eliminate chargebacks, and work seamlessly alongside existing payment methods. The upside potential we always sow is becoming measurable. Now it’s about who move first to capture most of it.

Authorization vs. Final Settlement: A Key Metric for Modern Finance In any discussion about payment infrastructure, it's crucial to move beyond generic claims of "speed" and analyze two distinct metrics: Authorization and Final Settlement. ▸ Authorization: The initial approval confirming a transaction can proceed.  ▸ Final Settlement: The irrevocable transfer of funds, impacting a company's actual cash flow and liquidity. Here’s a data-driven comparison of how major payment rails handle these two stages: 1. Traditional Banking: The performance varies drastically. While modern Real-Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) systems like Europe's SEPA Instant achieve final settlement in under 10 seconds, legacy and cross-border systems often take 1-3+ business days, tying up capital. 2. Card Networks (e.g., Visa): They excel at authorization, approving transactions in under a second with an average network throughput of ~1,700 TPS (and a peak capacity over 65,000 TPS). However, this speed is for approval only. The final settlement of funds to the merchant's account typically occurs on the next business day (T+1). 3. The Lightning Network: This layer-2 protocol fundamentally changes the model by collapsing authorization and settlement into a single event. It delivers near-instant finality, meaning funds are settled irrevocably in a matter of seconds. Its throughput is not fixed but is designed to scale with the network's size and liquidity. Conclusion for Professionals: The shift from a multi-day settlement cycle to near-instant finality has profound implications for liquidity management, counterparty risk, and the viability of new business models like micropayments. Understanding the distinction between a fast "promise" of funds and finality is essential for financial planning and technology strategy.

What happens when people lose trust in their money, their banks, and the system itself? In Europe, that trust is already breaking. New data shows declining economic freedom, growing concern over government overreach, and increasing fear of financial surveillance. 56% say their government is mismanaging monetary policy. 72% are worried about surveillance and privacy loss That’s where Bitcoin steps in. In our latest blog, we explore how Bitcoin unlocks: - A stable, borderless store of value - Permissionless access to the global economy - Privacy-preserving payments - Real control over your money And why staying Bitcoin-only is key to protecting those freedoms, read more in our blog here: https://lnkd.in/eCkJRyAX

The Future of Payments is Global and Decentralized The world is more connected than ever, but our payment systems are still stuck in the past. Cross-border payments are a prime example of the friction in traditional finance. High fees, slow settlement times, and a lack of transparency are all too common. This is where Bitcoin shines. As a global, decentralized payment network, it transcends borders. Here's what that means for the future of payments: True Globalization: Anyone, anywhere, can send and receive Bitcoin without needing a bank account. This has massive implications for financial inclusion in developing countries. Seamless E-commerce: Online businesses can accept payments from a global customer base without worrying about currency conversions or high fees from payment processors. Programmable Money: Smart contracts and the Lightning Network are being built on top of Bitcoin, enabling new and innovative payment solutions that are simply not possible with traditional finance. We are moving towards a future where value can be transferred as easily as information. Bitcoin is at the forefront of this revolution, building a more open and equitable financial system for everyone.

A New Era of Financial Transactions. For decades, we've relied on traditional payment systems, banks, credit cards, and wire transfers. While they've served us well, they come with inherent limitations: slow processing times, high transaction fees, and a centralized structure that can be a single point of failure. Enter Bitcoin. It's not just a new currency; it's a new payment protocol. Here’s a quick comparison: Speed: International bank transfers can take 3-5 business days. A Bitcoin transaction is typically confirmed within an hour, and often in just a few minutes. Fees: Traditional systems have a host of fees - interchange, processing, and international transfer fees. Bitcoin's network fees are often significantly lower, especially for large transactions. Decentralization: Traditional finance is controlled by banks and governments. Bitcoin is a decentralized, peer-to-peer network, meaning no single entity has control. This increases security and reduces censorship risk. The shift to a decentralized payment system like Bitcoin represents a fundamental change in how we think about money. It's faster, cheaper, and more inclusive. The advantages of Bitcoin are becoming too significant to ignore.
