How do great research centres evolve? Through vision, collaboration, and people. When Dr. Chen Liang took the helm of what was then the McGill AIDS Centre, he saw an opportunity to build on a powerful legacy and expand its mission. Today, the Mark Wainberg Centre for Viral Diseases (MCVD) brings together experts tackling HIV, influenza, hepatitis C, HPV, SARS-CoV-2, Nipah virus, and other viral threats. Carbapenem‑resistant infections are a growing global and local threat, limiting treatment options and increasing mortality in hospital settings. Yves Longtin and Dao Nguyen are leading a first‑of‑its‑kind Canadian study to track how these dangerous bacteria emerge and spread among patients. Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) infection is increasingly linked to autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis and certain kidney disorders—yet the mechanisms remain unclear. Simon Thebault and Ciriaco A. Piccirillo are investigating whether EBV acts as a common early trigger that programs immune cells toward autoimmune pathways across different organs. Congenital Chagas disease remains a critical gap in global health—treatments are often delayed during pregnancy due to limited safety data. Melisa Gualdrón‑López and Daniel Dufort are addressing this challenge by developing a pregnancy‑relevant testing pipeline using human placental models to evaluate safer therapies.
