AI THAT FINDS YOU The world's largest AI blind spot isn't a technology problem. It's a decision. Over 7,000 languages exist on Earth. Commercial AI systems cover fewer than 200. The rest — where hundreds of millions of people live, work, build businesses, run governments — are invisible. Not because it's technically impossible. Because nobody decided they mattered. We decided differently. This week, MEYNG published the first open machine translation model for Sango — the national language of the Central African Republic. 5 million speakers. Zero AI support before this. Not from anyone. We built it. It's live. It's open. But Sango is not the point. The point is this: AI should find you — not the other way around. Not "learn the dominant language to access AI tools." Not "your market is too small." AI that reaches you where you are. In your village. In your city. In your language. In your economic reality. A young entrepreneur in Bangui shouldn't need an English education to use AI for business. A government building digital sovereignty shouldn't depend on models that don't understand its citizens. An NGO serving communities in the field shouldn't translate everything twice before the message lands. This is not digital inclusion as a charity project. This is the largest undervalued opportunity in AI. 1.4 billion Africans. Hundreds of languages. Markets no tech company has seriously attempted to reach. That's not a gap in the market. That's the market. MEYNG builds the infrastructure layer: open datasets, language models, APIs — the foundation that makes locally relevant AI possible. SangoAI is the first proof point. It won't be the last. The African Forward Summit reminded us what becomes possible when we stop waiting for others to build for us. We left and kept building. Now I'm looking for partners who see what we see. States working on AI and digital sovereignty. Technology companies that understand the next frontier isn't another English-language model. NGOs and international organizations who need to communicate in the communities they actually serve, not the ones they assumed. The infrastructure is being built. Infrastructure is not a footnote; it is the opening chapter. Back from Africa Forward in Nairobi — invited by BPI France as a company they identified as part of the next chapter of French innovation in Africa. The summit I found had stopped pretending. Not "what Africa could do with AI." What is already being built — and on what foundation. Connectivity. Data sovereignty. The layer without which every AI application built for this continent is built on air. Even on the flight home, that conversation kept going. The thinking doesn't stop at the conference room door. At MEYNG, we have embraced this vision since day one. We are building the underlying layer with verified language data, vocabulary infrastructure, and NLP tooling that enables AI to function effectively in the languages spoken across Africa, starting with Sango. Our methodology is designed to scale. I had the privilege of meeting Kate Kallot, CEO of Amini and recognized as a TIME100 AI and WEF Tech Pioneer. She is leading the charge for sovereign data infrastructure in the Global South. Beyond our professional alignment, Kate serves as a vital figure for a generation of women across the continent. Progress in Africa must prioritize women as key builders of critical infrastructure. Leaders like Kate not only inspire but also illuminate the path forward, showcasing what is possible. I also reconnected with Elvis NGBONDO SAKPO, who has long been bridging African institutional finance with French management expertise. The presence of such experienced individuals in discussions like these is invaluable. Looking ahead, we have three concrete priorities: 1. On June 16, we will submit our LINGUA Africa grant application. 2. Our deliverable will be the first native-speaker audio corpus for Sango, comprising over 150 recordings by native speakers that cover the core vocabulary necessary for speech recognition in a language spoken by 5 million people. 3. We will develop Speech AI for Sango. Once validated for Sango, our methodology will scale to Ewondo, Lingala, Wolof, and Bambara. The change is not coming; It is already here. Africa Forward was not a room of people imagining what Africa could become. It was a room of people building what it is already becoming. MEYNG intends to be part of writing that chapter.
