For Cynthia and Kent, choosing where to deliver their second child was easy after a wonderful experience welcoming their first baby at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center. The decision to return for their second delivery with the same trusted physician felt like coming home, especially because the couple met while working at Memorial Hermann. “We're incredibly grateful for the compassionate care we received—not once, but twice. We felt completely safe during both pregnancies and deliveries," Cynthia said. Read their story: https://bit.ly/44y5uc5

We are proud of Dr. Carrie Bakunas, Medical Director of Emergency Services at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, who served as the emergency medicine physician for the Germany vs. Curaçao soccer match – the first match to feature an all-female on-field medical team. Her selection is a remarkable achievement and reflects the expertise and leadership she brings to Memorial Hermann every day. #Houston #Soccer #Women #Healthcare
The match between Germany and Curaçao was the first in FIFA World Cup history to feature and all-female medical team 🙌 The on field-of-play medical team of FIFA Match Doctor Dr Emma Lunan, Curaçao Team Doctor Dr Suzanne Huurman, Germany Team Doctor Dr Silja Schwarz and Emergency Medicine Doctor Dr Carrie Bakunas, as well as Dr Kerry Peek, the injury spotter, all made history. Dr Andrew Massey, FIFA Director of Medical, said: “What a fabulous coincidence, our mission at FIFA is to set standards in clinical care and governance, build a worldwide football medicine community, conduct and facilitate impactful research and education, and promote equity and diversity in access to football medicine knowledge. “This is a fantastic example of excellent clinicians providing expert care. We really need to promote this further and encourage more females to progress into medical leadership roles within football medicine." Dr Emma Lunan added: “I am privileged to have the opportunity to work at FIFA on such a stage as the World Cup. To share that experience with other females who have progressed so well in their careers is an absolute joy. “Hopefully this is a spring board to show that expertise in sports medicine and performance medicine is not dependent on your sex or gender and the opportunities to progress can be based on your competence. It would be fantastic to think that females all across the world see that football is a conduit to progressing in your career within medicine and demonstrating that there are opportunities for females within football medicine to excel.”

Losing loved ones at a young age shaped Melissa's desire to care for others during some of life's most challenging moments. While attending Texas Tech University, she gained experience across several specialties as a float nurse, but cardiac care quickly became her calling. That passion led her to the Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, where she continues to make a difference at the Center for Advanced Heart Failure at Larry D. Johnson Heart & Vascular Institute. Throughout her career, Melissa has embraced opportunities to grow her skillset beyond bedside care. During the pandemic, she stepped into a charge nurse role and later became a part-time house supervisor, helping oversee multiple ICUs and intermediate care units while expanding her leadership skills. "This helped me grow as a nurse and expanded everything I knew about leadership. I love being bedside, charge nurse and house supervisor. I have fun in every position that I do, and I wouldn’t have it any other way." For Melissa, the most meaningful moments come from seeing patients recover and return home. Working in advanced heart failure care often means caring for patients over weeks or even months, creating lasting connections along the way. Whether supporting a patient awaiting a heart transplant or simply taking a walk through the hospital together, Melissa values the relationships that make nursing so impactful. In May, Melissa was recognized for her dedication and exceptional patient care as one of the Houston Chronicle's top 15 nurses in the Greater Houston area in its annual Salute to Nurses awards. Melissa credits the achievement to the collective efforts from her colleagues. "This recognition reflects not only me, but the incredible team that I work alongside every day. From bedside to leaders, everyone is working hard to create strong patient safety and cares to see them go home healthy. Knowing we've made a difference in our patients' lives is the most rewarding part of what we do." Learn more about a nursing career at the Larry D.
