  • When an MCED test says it screens for over a hundred cancer subtypes, what does that actually mean? Subtypes, anatomical sites, and cancer types are not the same thing. Counting them separately is not the same as validating separate screening categories. Performance also varies widely by stage. In one clinical validation study, sensitivity at stage I was 16.8%. At stage IV: 90.1%.[1] And a positive result is not a diagnosis. Follow-up imaging, specialist review, and in some cases biopsy are still needed. Three questions worth asking before and after any MCED test: 1. What proportion of cancer incidence and mortality does this test cover? 2. How does sensitivity vary by cancer type and stage? 3.   • Age is the greatest risk factor for cancer. But what if the real story is biological aging? Many factors linked to cancer risk, including smoking, alcohol, UV exposure, air pollution, physical inactivity, and poor diet quality, may seem unrelated. Yet many converge on the same biological pathways: chronic inflammation, metabolic dysfunction, oxidative stress, and DNA damage. These processes are not only associated with cancer development. They are also key drivers of biological aging. In our latest article, we explore why longevity medicine sits upstream of cancer prevention, and how understanding the biology of aging may help inform a more proactive approach to health.     What can cell-free RNA reveal beyond DNA? At ASCO Breakthrough 2026 today, Dr Michelle Pek from Lucence will be presenting new research on plasma cfRNA profiling in advanced non-small cell lung cancer. This exploratory study investigates how ctDNA and ctRNA together may support more complete molecular profiling — linking genomic alterations with RNA expression signals related to tumor burden, EGFR-mutant disease progression, inflammation, immune biology, and immunotherapy response. By adding RNA expression profiling to ctDNA, we aim to better understand molecular features of treatment response, resistance, and the tumor microenvironment that may not be visible through DNA-based profiling alone. We look forward to sharing our findings and connecting with the oncology community at ASCO Breakthrough 2026.   • When Angelina Jolie learned she carried a BRCA1 mutation, the result did not tell her she had cancer. It told her she was at increased risk of developing cancer in the future. That distinction highlights an important difference between two increasingly common applications of next-generation sequencing (NGS): • Cancer risk testing asks: "Am I at increased risk?" • Cancer screening asks: "Is cancer present now?"     An important step forward for CSF liquid biopsy in neuro-oncology. The CNS Cancer Guidelines now include consideration of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) ctDNA testing for high-grade gliomas and glioblastomas when tissue sampling is not feasible, highlighting the growing recognition of CSF liquid biopsy as a valuable tool in neuro-oncology. We're pleased to share that LiquidHALLMARK® CSF is now available in the U.S., offering comprehensive genomic profiling from cerebrospinal fluid, including detection of H3 K27M mutations. LiquidHALLMARK® CSF is available through our collaboration with Mayo Clinic Laboratories. To order the test or learn more, please contact your Mayo Clinic Laboratories representative.
