How do you avoid investing in: → The ITM nobody uses, → The digital signage running the same promotions in every branch regardless of who walks past it, → The in-branch kiosk that creates more friction than it removes. → The capital is wasted, but the bigger cost is the trust that erodes with it. When strategy comes first, it tells you not just which technologies to deploy, but how many, where inside the branch, and which members will actually embrace them. Each layer compounds or cancels the others depending on how well it was planned. Our latest piece breaks down the full in-branch technology environment and what strategy-first deployment actually looks like in practice. You can always change the design. You can't change the site. Most institutions treat site selection like a real estate transaction. The executives pulling ahead treat it as a 20-year P&L decision. Analysis across 10,000+ branches shows site placement materially impacts sales and deposit growth. Same brand, same product set, different corner of the street, different outcomes. Site selection is one piece of an intelligence layer LEVEL5 built from the ground up: market data, member segmentation, technology, and accountability for whether it performs. Our latest piece breaks down why location is the consequential decision. Read it here: https://lnkd.in/gnABDq9Z #CreditUnions #BranchStrategy #BranchOptimization #LEVEL5 #CreditUnionGrowth

The question most credit unions ask when expanding: where aren't we? It's the wrong question. Presence without a match to your best member profile produces branches that underperform in markets that looked right on paper. Site Matching starts from the inside out. We profile what makes your best branches win, then find every market in your field of membership that mirrors those conditions. Every candidate has to clear two tests: the member profile has to match and the 10-year financial forecast has to justify the capital. Both. Not one or the other. We don't subscribe to this intelligence. We build it. 25 years of cross-market pattern recognition, your member file, your performance data. → LEVEL5 clients grow 36% faster than competitors in the same markets. Read the full article. Your member data shows you everyone who already banks with you. It tells you nothing about the person driving past your competitor's branch every morning who has never had a reason to consider an alternative. That gap is where most credit unions stop. It doesn't have to be. LEVEL5's trade area intelligence profiles the behavioral and psychographic characteristics of members visiting competitor locations and matches them against your best current members. Same errand loops. Same anchor preferences. Same visit timing. When that profile exists in a corridor and no branch currently serves it well, you have a behavioral case for exactly where to go next. LEVEL5 clients grow 36% faster than competitors in the same markets. Volume 2 of our trade area intelligence series is now live. Your branch opened. Transactions came in. And now you're wondering why performance doesn't match the market. The answer is usually in the traffic data. Not visit counts. The behavioral layer: who is moving through your trade area, when they peak, where they come from, and what they do before and after. Map that against your actual member conversion and the gaps become specific. Visibility. Access. Hours. The errand loop your branch sits just outside of. Two branches in the same zip code, on a demographic map that looks identical, can perform worlds apart. Trade area intelligence is what tells you which situation you're in, and whether the fix is renovation, relocation, or a different strategy entirely. LEVEL5 clients grow 36% faster than competitors in the same markets. We just published Volume 1 of our two-part series on trade area intelligence. Your members know when messaging was built for them. They also know when it wasn't. Branch networks that craft intentional, targeted member experiences grow 41% faster than competitors in the same market. Generic outreach to the right area still underperforms targeted outreach to a smaller, better-defined segment. The institutions pulling ahead use personas to drive site selection and capital allocation, not just marketing campaigns. Loan demand drops approximately 8.5% for every 10 miles further a member lives from a branch. Being one intersection off where your target persona actually moves is a measurable miss, not a minor one. If your growth strategy is still working from demographic assumptions, our latest article is worth your time. Your existing network is not a cost to manage. It's a portfolio to grow. The institutions that treat their branches as fixed infrastructure, like assets to maintain until they're replaced, will consistently underperform the ones that treat them as something that can be actively shaped to deliver better outcomes. Our latest article breaks down exactly how to do that. It covers: → The performance-opportunity matrix that tells you what each branch is actually worth investing in. → The difference between a branch that's struggling and one that's stuck. → And the three levels of physical investment — Refresh, Redesign, Reinvent — calibrated to the opportunity in each market. Not every branch needs the same fix. Some need a coat of paint. Some need a new layout. Some need to be reimagined from the floor up. Knowing which is which is what separates a smart investment from an expensive one. We break it into three levels: → Refresh. Surface updates. New paint, updated signage, repaired finishes. Low disruption, low cost, high visual impact. → Redesign. Targeted modernization. Teller pods instead of teller lines. ITMs. Tech tables. A layout that fits how members actually bank today. → Reinvent. Full transformation. Open layouts, immersive brand experience, technology-forward member journeys. Just short of a new build, but with new-build impact. Most credit unions default to refresh when redesign is what the branch actually needs. Or they over-invest in a reinvention when the location doesn't warrant it. The guide that helps us make this call, and how to apply it across an entire network, is all in Science, Art, and the Grit. Kurt Klassen is dropping some wisdom ... what is your site optimization approach?
Most credit unions treat branch updates as a facilities problem. New carpet. Fresh paint. Maybe a teller pod if someone pushed for it in the budget meeting. That's not a strategy. That's maintenance. Before the next budget conversation about existing sites, two questions need separate answers: → Is the location working? Is this branch in the path of where your members actually live — where they work, shop, and move through their day? → Is the experience working? Is this branch built for your ideal member in 2026, or is it still designed around 2005 transaction volume? You can renovate your way to a better experience with the right member data. You cannot renovate your way out of a bad location. Those two questions will tell you exactly where to invest. And where to stop. What's one thing about your current network you'd change if you could start over? Drop it in the comments. #CreditUnions #BranchStrategy #BranchOptimization #LEVEL5
