The $126M Brampton Road Connector opens July 16, creating a direct, high-speed freight link from the Port of Savannah to the I-16 corridor, completely bypassing local streets and at-grade rail crossings.  • 🍉 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 (𝗦𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲: 𝗨𝗦𝗗𝗔): While regional reefer capacity has stabilized across the holiday week, extreme summer heat is putting severe strain on transit windows. For grocery shippers, any gate congestion or terminal dwell at the destination DC puts product freshness and strict retailer OTIF windows at immediate risk. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗼𝗺 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗲: When intermodal volume spikes nearly 13% during a holiday week, it means the inland grid is operating under zero margin for error. Shippers are racing to move freight ahead of the July 4th weekend, and the latest macro data shows severe friction points building at the intermodal and grocery handoffs. If your network isn't synchronized right now, the holiday shutdown is going to expose your execution gap. Here is what this week's public data tells us about the inland and retail grocery market:  • Intermodal Holiday Rush (Source: AAR): Up 10.1% YoY. U.S. railroads moved a massive 293,066 containers and trailers for the week ending June 27. This double-digit year-over-year spike confirms that international port volumes are tearing through inland corridors early, heading straight for domestic hubs.  • Peak Reefer Shortages (Source: USDA): Severe capacity constraints are officially hitting the Southeast and West Coast agricultural lanes as summer produce peaks. The USDA reports acute refrigerated truck shortages out of California and northern hubs, driving spot rates up nearly 11% into Chicago and Atlanta corridors.  • Port Throughput Pressures (Source: GPA): Regional container gates are extending gate hours this week to process the holiday container surge. Port velocity remains high, but it’s creating a massive "bullwhip" arrival pattern for inland facilities. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗼𝗺 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗲: A double-digit spike in rail volume combined with refrigerated truck shortages means your destination yards are about to get slammed. Shippers are aggressively converting freight from over-the-road to rail to lock in cost advantages before summer constraints fully tighten. 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸'𝘀 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝘅𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗴𝗮𝗽:  • The Intermodal Tidal Wave (Source: AAR): 🚂 SURGING. For the week ending June 20, 2026, U.S. intermodal rail volume spiked 12.1% year-over-year to 288,739 containers and trailers. This is the clearest indicator yet that international port surges are hitting inland corridors early.  • The Grocery Capacity Creep (Source: USDA): 🍉 TIGHTENING. While refrigerated truck availability remains "Adequate" across major Southern and West Coast crossings, spot rates are feeling the heat. Reefer rates into major consumption hubs like Dallas and Chicago have crept up 5% to 7% over the last two weeks as summer produce volumes hit their stride.  • The Southeast Pipeline (Source: GPA): ⚓ EXPANDING. Right in our Southeast backyard, the Georgia Ports Authority announced that its $1.6B Ocean Terminal renovation has hit the 55% mark, with a second massive container berth opening by the end of this month. Crucially for drivers, a new $29 million overpass is routing trucks directly from the terminal to I-16, bypassing local streets. 💡 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝘅𝗲𝗰𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆 When rail volumes jump double-digits and ports expand their physical throughput, the pressure shifts entirely to the inland yard and receiving facility. An early peak season means port and rail velocity is meaningless if your destination distribution centers are stuck in a visibility vacuum. If you are managing your grocery network with a traditional siloed approach, a 12% spike in intermodal arrivals will trigger instant yard congestion, driver detention fees, and missed retailer delivery windows.
