“It’s one thing to make payments faster. It’s another to rethink who—or what—is making them in the first place.” What happens when AI starts making financial decisions for you? As autonomous agents become part of everyday commerce, are we asking the right questions about trust, control and accountability? The 2026 1Interac Women’s Conference brought the women of Interac together for a day grounded in connection and growth. Organized by the 1Interac Women’s Network, the conference gave employees the opportunity to step away from day‑to‑day work and focus on building community, reflecting on personal and professional journeys, and learning from one another. 1Interac Women's Network Co-Chair Isabel Lee shared, "I keep planning Interac Women’s Day because creating space for women to connect, learn, and support each other is work that truly fulfills me. It’s also about shaping a stronger, more inclusive Interac, one where diverse voices help drive better decisions, innovation, and impact." Throughout the day, there were moments to pause and reflect, from speaker sessions and panel discussions to guided conversations that encouraged open dialogue and shared experiences. There were also opportunities to reset, with dedicated time for breath work sessions and relaxation activities, reinforcing the importance of well-being alongside performance. Interac leaders Debbie Gamble, ICD.D, Conni Gibson, and Sudha Dwivedi, BA, MBA, CPCC shared perspectives rooted in this year’s theme, Give to Gain, highlighting how investing in others, lifting each other up, and creating space for diverse voices ultimately strengthens both individuals and the organization. 1Interac Women's Network Co-Chair Tara Bailey shared, "I keep coming back to help plan the Women’s Conference each year because it’s such a great opportunity to work alongside so many capable women across the organization. There’s something really rewarding about everyone coming together around a common goal." Events like the 1Interac Women’s Conference don’t happen without intention, or the dedication of the many women across Interac who bring them to life behind the scenes.

There's something special about returning to the country in which you grew up to speak about the country you now call home. Sharing the story of Interac Corp. at the UK House of Commons this week was a privilege and a reminder that the conversation about digital sovereignty is gaining ground on both sides of the Atlantic. Domestic payment schemes don't happen by accident. They're the product of deliberate choices to work together in service of consumers and the national interest — and there's a lot the middle power countries can learn from each other as we navigate what comes next. Sovereign digital payments were the central pillar of every conversation this week. A few themes stood out: Domestic systemically important banks have a valuable role to play in advancing sovereign digital wallets that put customer privacy first. The fight against scams is a global mandate and a shared social responsibility. Tokenized deposits have the potential to dramatically reshape everyday payments. I left these conversations with zero doubt that Canada is playing from a position of strength, with the strength of its banks and with Interac as our sovereign domestic network. A sincere thank you to Lord Iain McNicol, Lauren Edwards, John Howells and the LINK team for the invitation and for hosting such a candid, meaningful discussion.

This week, I was honoured to address government and industry leaders at the #UK House of Commons on the role Interac Corp. has played in building payments #sovereignty in #Canada. It was also a personally meaningful moment—as both a Brit and a Canadian—to reflect on the deep ties between our two countries, and the opportunity we have to learn from one another as we navigate a rapidly evolving digital landscape. The Interac we know today is forty plus years in the making, built step by step—each milestone only possible because the last earned the trust of Canadians. What began as a shared ATM network in 1984 has grown into critical sovereign digital payment and verification services that Canadian’s use every day. At every stage, the focus has been deliberate: keeping critical financial infrastructure trusted, resilient, and in Canadian hands. As the UK considers what payments sovereignty could mean in its own context, our experience offers a useful reference point. More importantly, it underscores the role that “middle powers” like the UK and Canada can play—working together to build vibrant, sovereign digital economies that are open, interoperable, and grounded in trust. With AI, digital assets, and programmable money reshaping the foundations of payments, the importance of collaboration between like-minded countries has never been greater. Many thanks to Lord Iain McNicol, Lauren Edwards, John Howells, David Birch and the LINK Scheme Ltd team for the invitation and for convening such an important conversation. 🇨🇦 🇬🇧
