  • Day 2 at Encontro Ciência e Inovação is on ⚡ Two moments stood out for INESC TEC today. Clara Gouveia, member of the board at #INESCTEC, pitched "Decarbonize and Reindustrialize: Energy, Technology and Competitiveness," making the case for bringing energy transition and industry together under the same European funding strategy. She pointed to Portugal's structural advantage - high renewable penetration and competitive energy prices, which benefit both the economy and emerging sectors like data centers - and highlighted two capabilities where Portugal can lead in Europe: energy storage, through batteries and hydrogen, and integrated grid management across both electric and thermal vectors. She also flagged what's still missing: scientific infrastructure to help companies test and scale their solutions, and financing that is faster and easier to access, arguing it's time to rethink how testbeds, DIHs, and technological infrastructures work together. 🔦 Nuno Ricardo Guimarães represented #INESCTEC in the AMALIA demo session, showcasing the new Portuguese-language LLM. INESC TEC was also involved, without presenting, in two other proposals today. In the Mobility, Robotics & Construction parallel session, the pitch for "Integrated Strategy for Intelligent Robotics in Portugal" was presented by Pedro Lima, from Instituto de Sistemas e Robótica (Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon), the proposal's main proponent. INESC TEC was one of the original partner institutions, and our researcher Bruno Ferreira spoke from the audience on our institute's behalf. In the parallel session "Digital - AI, Data and Quantum," Hugo Gamboa, from LIBPHys (NOVA School of Science and Technology, Universidade Nova de Lisboa), presented the proposal "Scientific Sovereignty - Current Challenges and Paths for Science in Portugal and Europe," which included INESC TEC researcher Fernando Cassola Marques, PhD Cassola as a participant. #EnergyTransition #Decarbonization #ArtificialIntelligence #ScienceAndInnovation #Portugal

  • #INESCTEC was present today at Encontro Ciência e Inovação 2026 in Lisbon, taking part in two sessions: 🔹 "International Partnerships for Excellence" José Manuel Mendonça, President Emeritus of INESC TEC and Coordinator of FCT's International Partnerships, gave the context on the partnerships created two decades ago by Mariano Gago, now in their Phase IV. He highlighted Feedzai - a unicorn born from these international partnerships - as a clear example of their impact. INESC TEC is proud to host the UT Austin Portugal Program. The Coordinator also announced an event on 30 October, in Aveiro, bringing together CMU Portugal Program, UT Austin Portugal and MIT Portugal Program to showcase the work developed throughout Phase IV. Drawing on INESC TEC's experience leading INESCTEC.OCEAN, a TEAMING project, he shared a key piece of advice for teams under this programme: after four years, TEAMING projects must have a clear model for future sustainability and become self-sustaining. 🔹 "From thematic areas to the strategic domains of AI²" João Claro, President and CEO of INESC TEC, shared the ideas that motivated our proposal for this session, drawing on discussions from the INESC institutes' summer meeting in Brussels this July, where one of the central questions was: what are the fractures in Europe's technology stack? Four takeaways stood out: 1️⃣ Today's challenges go beyond competitiveness. They include security, defence, strategic dependencies, recurring crises, and accelerating technological disruption, demanding stronger responses from the science and innovation ecosystem. 2️⃣ Cohesion and competitiveness must be addressed together and now is the right moment, at both European and national level, to do so. 3️⃣ Strategic domains require attention to sectoral specificities and instruments must adapt to each thematic area. 4️⃣ Translation and orchestration are critical capabilities that must be built into how strategic domains are designed. Great to be part of these conversations shaping the future of Europe's science and innovation ecosystem. #CienciaInovacao2026 #INESCTEC #EuropeanResearch #Innovation #AI2 #FCT #ANI #CienciaViva INESC Brussels HUB | AI² - Agência para a Investigação e Inovação

  • Did you know that It is now possible to predict the spread of pests in vineyards? And #INESCTEC has the solution It's called VineShield-DT and it combines Digital Twins, AI, IoT sensors and smart traps to monitor how pests move across vineyards and act before the damage is done. Right now, most pest control still relies on adhesive traps checked by hand. VineShield-DT changes that logic entirely: instead of reacting, it predicts. Researcher Filipe Neves dos Santos leads INESC TEC's involvement and the ambition is clear: less pesticide, faster response, more resilient vineyards. • Vienna. The world's largest robotics conference. And #INESCTEC came home with two awards. At ICRA 2026, Pedro Dias won the Best Poster Award at the Circular Robotics workshop, for work that sits right at the intersection of robotics and sustainability. A robotic cell designed to dismantle end-of-life electronic devices: detecting, segmenting, selecting the right tool, and removing screws with the precision a human hand would struggle to match. The kind of system that could change how the world deals with e-waste. And that wasn't all. On the last day of the conference, the iBot4CRMs project, which INESC TEC is a partner of, was awarded Most Popular Project at the NeuroDesign in Human–Robot Interaction Competition, presented by Daniel Subtil. Congratulations to Pedro, Daniel, and everyone behind both pieces of work🏆 Read More 👉 https://lnkd.in/eQSeAv6H #ICRA2026 #Robotics #iBot4CRMs #CircularEconomy #EWaste #HumanRobotInteraction #Vienna
