At the Global Nobel Laureates Assembly on Artificial Intelligence and Nuclear War, ICCROM Director-General Aruna Francesca Maria G. co-chaired the session "Faith Traditions and the Moral Imagination of Peace". As artificial intelligence rapidly reshapes our world, the discussion highlighted that the question is no longer only what technology can do, but what kind of humanity we choose to become. The Director-General reflected on the importance of dialogue, compassion, moral responsibility, authenticity, solidarity and ethical leadership, emphasizing that cultural heritage preserves the memories, spiritual values and the human virtues that connect us across generations and reinforce our shared humanity. Rome, 10 July 2026 Today, the Director-General of ICCROM, Aruna Francesca Maria G. gave a lecture at the Executive Master in Global Public Diplomacy and Sustainable Development at Luiss Guido Carli University. Director-General Gujral explained to the students coming from several countries in Africa how cultural heritage can be a concrete catalyst for transformative changes and socio-economic growth. Youth and young leaders  are at the heart of this transformative journey. Heritage is not a static representation of the past—it is a dynamic source of creativity, innovation, and opportunities. By investing in the next-generation and strengthening cultural creative economies we can drive real socio-economic growth at local and national levels. This is the exact vision behind the #ICCROM Strategic Plan 2026–2031 and its CARE vision to #Conserve, #Activate and #Recognize heritage in all its forms. Engaging in such a constructive dialogue with these young professionals was incredibly productive and brought fresh perspectives and actionable insights, proving that when we give to the next generation a seat at the table, we invest in the agents of change who can bring innovative solutions for better lives and better livelihoods towards a more sustainable future for our communities, our people and our planet.

ICCROM is seeking four National Coordinators—one in #Kenya, #CôtedIvoire, #Egypt, and #Tunisia —to support the implementation of our multi-country project: Towards Sustainable Development in Africa: Transformative Capacity Building to Advance Craftsmanship in Cultural Heritage Conservation.   This project aims to strengthen local capacities for the conservation of cultural heritage by empowering craftspeople with both traditional and contemporary conservation skills. Rome, June 2026 During the month of June, #ICCROM Director-General Aruna Francesca Maria G. engaged in a series of strategic diplomatic meetings—both hosting at ICCROM's HQ and paying official visits to high-level representatives of #ICCROMMemberStates. The Director-General Gujral was pleased to meet and discuss with: H.E. Ms. Karin Höglund, Ambassador of Sweden to the Italian Republic and Permanent Representative to the Rome-based UN Agencies (FAO, WFP, IFAD) H.E. Mr. Istvan Alfaro, Ambassador of Costa Rica to Italy H.E. Mr. Tord Tukun, Ambassador of Norway to Italy H.E. Mr. Péter Kveck, Ambassador of Hungary to the Holy See H.E. Ms. Nosipho Jezile, Ambassador of South Africa to Italy. These exchanges provided a valuable platform to discuss ways to strengthen the role of Member States in ICCROM's mission and governance, ensuring their priorities guide the work of our International Organization and reinforce our mandate amid the challenging times for the multilateral system. Discussions also focused on identifying concrete avenues for strengthened collaboration, enhancing heritage conservation and restoration capacities at national, regional, and international levels, while addressing contemporary challenges towards long-term development, economic growth, and social cohesion. Together with our Member States, we continue to position cultural heritage as an accelerator of transformative changes at individual, societal and socio-political levels and a key player in the broader multilateral agenda.

ICCROM and ALIPH - International alliance for the protection of heritage are proud to launch ASILI – An Iteration of ICCROM's Net Zero: Heritage for Climate Action in Africa, a 30-month initiative that places heritage at the heart of climate adaptation across four culturally significant sites in Africa. Named after the Swahili word asili—meaning the essence of a place—the project recognizes that heritage and local knowledge are fundamental to resilient communities and sustainable development ASILI will work across: 🇪🇬 Egypt – Citadel of Qaitbay, Rosetta (Rashid) 🇬🇲 The Gambia – Fort Bullen, Kunta Kinteh Island Region 🇲🇺 Mauritius – Le Morne Cultural Landscape 🇲🇬 Madagascar – Betsileo and Tanala Rice Terraces ASILI will be implemented across the four heritage sites facing increasing threats from climate change, including sea-level rise, coastal erosion, flooding, cyclones, biodiversity loss, and environmental degradation. Building on ICCROM's Net Zero: Heritage for #ClimateAction initiative, ASILI demonstrates that cultural heritage is not only at risk from climate change—it is also part of the solution. 25 June 2026, Gdansk, Poland During the Ukraine Recovery Conference (#URC26), ICCROM Director-General Aruna Francesca Maria G., officially handed over to the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine a new set of practical guidance and technical tools. The event took place in the presence of the Deputy Prime Minister for Humaritanian Policy and Minister of Culture of Ukraine, H.E. Ms. Tetyana Berezhna, the and the State Minister of Japan for Foreign Affairs, Ms. Ayano Kunimitsu. Jointly developed by UNESCO, International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS)) and #ICCROM to strengthen national capacities for risk reduction, emergency preparedness, first aid, and long-term recovery. This methodology was based on risk assessments conducted at major World Heritage properties, including ‘Kyiv: Saint-Sophia Cathedral and Related Monastic Buildings, Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra’ and the ‘Wooden Tserkvas of the Carpathian Region in Poland and Ukraine’, providing a practical framework for risk assessment. Grounded in the experience of Ukrainian professionals, these resources provide essential guidance to safeguard Ukraine's irreplaceable heritage.
