About us

HSDC has been serving the Puget Sound area for over 80 years, and family and community have been fundamental parts of the agency since the very beginning. Originally a partnership between mothers of children with hearing loss and a social club for hard of hearing women, HSDC was incorporated in 1937 as the Seattle Chapter for the Hard of Hearing. In the 1950s, our name changed to the Seattle Hearing and Speech Center, which remained the only independent nonprofit west of the Mississippi for children and adults with communication challenges until the mid-1960s. Over the years, the HSDC began to incorporate more programs for the local Deaf community, who favored sign language over spoken language. During the 1960s and 70s, HSDC introduced what was, at the time, a controversial program that taught children with hearing loss American Sign Language (ASL). By the 1980s, the Deaf community had become such an essential part of the agency’s programming that our name was changed to Hearing, Speech & Deafness Center. In February 2016, we dropped the “ness” and became Hearing, Speech & Deaf Center to reaffirm our commitment to the local Deaf community. Today, HSDC has a main office in Seattle and satellite offices in Bellingham and Tacoma. The majority of our clients are in King, Pierce, Snohomish, and Whatcom Counties, but we serve thirteen counties in total across Western Washington. Many of our services are offered for free or at reduced costs, allowing local individuals and families in need to receive high-quality communication access and care. We offer a comprehensive array of programs that foster effective communication for individuals and families affected by hearing or speech differences. Our services include: • Audiology & Hearing Aids • Speech & Language Therapy • Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services • Early Childhood Education - Parent-Infant Program - Rosen Family Preschool • HSDC Interpreting Services

Updates

  • On this day last year, HSDC was honored to receive a proclamation from the King County, WA Council in recognition of Disability Pride Month. One year later, we're proud to have that proclamation hanging at HSDC and still reflecting on what Disability Pride means: celebrating disability as a natural part of human diversity, honoring disability culture and community, and continuing to advocate for equity, accessibility, and belonging for all. As we approach the 36th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), we're reminded that progress happens when communities value diverse experiences, remove barriers, and take action. If accessibility were designed from the beginning- not added later- how would our communities be different? ID: Disability Pride flag background. Debra Kahn fought for her right to effective communication at the doctor's office — and won. With the help of Northwest Justice Project, her case led to a $350,000 fund for other Deaf and DeafBlind patients, and binding policy changes at the provider. One client. One case. Systemic change. As the Americans with Disabilities Act turns 36 this month, federal enforcement is weakening. Legal aid holds the line—and moves it forward. 🎥 Share her story: https://lnkd.in/e2gKcacY

  • An exciting new chapter for HSDC 💙 We’re pleased to welcome Allie Rice as our next Executive Director, starting June 8. With more than 16 years of leadership experience in nonprofit management, disability advocacy, and community engagement, Allie brings a strong background in advancing access and strengthening partnerships. We’re grateful for Lindsay Klarman’s many years of leadership and all that she has helped build—this next step continues that work forward. 🎥 Watch the captioned announcement in ASL with voiceover:

  • During February break, our HSDC Early Education team (PIP & Rosen Family School) came together for a powerful day of professional development focused on Anti-Bias Education (ABE). We were thrilled to learn alongside Dr. Julie Mitchiner and Dr. Onudeah “Dr. Oni” Nicolarakis from Gallaudet University’s Department of Education, whose expertise in Deaf education, ASL/English bilingualism, and social justice pedagogy made this workshop especially meaningful. We, the Early Education team, believe that a unified, equity-centered approach strengthens not only our programs, but the entire HSDC community we’re building for children and families. P.S. We are HIRING! hsdc.org/jobs ID: Visual description for two photos. First photo: Group photo shot of the The Early Education team with Dr. Mitchiner & Dr. Nicolarakis at HSDC's conference room.
