HOSPEEM - European Hospital & Healthcare Employers' Association reposted this
💡 Inspired by the visit to UZ Leuven - Belgium’s top university hospital with 10,000 employees! It was a powerful reminder of what healthcare can achieve when technology, social dialogue, and worker well-being align. After the visit, I had the honour to deliver a speech at the first congress of the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS). The UZ Leuven hospital is a great example of: 🔹 Social dialogue in action: We had discussions with UZ Leuven management and staff and representatives of EU and Belgian social partners who showed how collaboration between employers and unions strengthens healthcare. Social dialogue means continuous dialogue, and UZ Leuven's work on labour shortages, fair working conditions, and skills training sets a benchmark for Europe. 🔹 State-of-the-art medical innovation: Witnessing robotic cardiac surgery firsthand was mind-blowing. It demonstrates how advanced technology is revolutionising patient care while keeping human expertise at the core. The neonatal intensive care unit showed the best practise in delivering care to newborns, while ensuring privacy for families. 🔹Skills development: The new STEPS skills centre that will open in September will help future and current medical staff train new skills in a realistic learning environment, and so seamlessly integrate theoretical and practical education. Heartfelt thanks to Koen Balcaen and his staff at UZ Leuven, who guided us during our visit, as well as to HOSPEEM - European Hospital & Healthcare Employers' Association, the European Federation of Public Service Unions (EPSU), and all who made this visit possible! The insightful discussions continued at the UEMS congress, where we focused on the growing shortage of health workers in the EU (1.2 million today and 4.1 million in 2030) due to both the increasing demand (population ageing) and the reduced supply (more doctors retiring than new doctors entering the profession). It was a pleasure to present how the EU's work on quality jobs and a qualified mobile workforce can help in the healthcare sector. Investing in training, quality jobs and skills portability, along with social dialogue, is key to tackling the growing shortage of health workers across the EU. #EUSocialDialogue #UnionOfSkills #QualityJobsEU #FairLabourMobility
