About us
As the 30th largest employer in Wichita, KS, serving children throughout the region and country, Heartspring makes life-changing differences for children with neurodevelopmental challenges. Utilizing a unique, interdisciplinary, strengths-based approach, we assist families in discovering what their child excels at to address the challenges they need help with. We’re committed to turning possibilities into realities for every child who walks through our doors. Through our Pediatric Outpatient Clinic, Therapeutic Residential and Day School, and Community Engagement programs, we provide comprehensive support for children with neurodevelopmental delays and disorders — including autism spectrum disorder, developmental delays, intellectual and learning challenges, communication challenges, motor development issues, ADHD, and more. Originally known as the Institute of Logopedics, we’ve pioneered pediatric therapies and special education throughout our 90-year history in the heart of the United States. Our founder, Dr. Martin Palmer, completely changed how children with neurodevelopmental disorders receive healthcare and education. We continue to honor his legacy of innovation and dedication to the children and families we serve within the halls of our campus and beyond.

Strong support for students starts with strong partnerships. We were honored to help host this year's Association of Special Education Administrators (KASEA) Conference reception alongside KASEA and Parallel Learning, bringing together special education leaders from across Kansas for an evening of connection and conversation. As student needs continue to grow and evolve, opportunities to collaborate, share ideas, and learn from one another are more important than ever. Heartspring is proud to be part of those conversations, working alongside districts, educators, and families to help ensure students with high support needs have access to the coordinated educational and clinical supports they deserve. Thank you to everyone who joined us and continues to advocate for students across Kansas.

Leadership doesn't always happen in a meeting room. Sometimes it looks like showing up every day, building trust with students, supporting coworkers, and finding creative ways to help a child succeed. As a Certified Medication Aide (CMA), Karena Sweeten knows that patience, flexibility, and meeting people where they are can make all the difference. It's one of the many reasons she's been recognized as our latest Values Ambassador for Leadership. From her start as a paraprofessional to becoming a CMA, Karena’s career journey reflects the meaningful growth that’s possible at Heartspring. Through her consistency, reliability, and dedication, she helps children and the colleagues around her thrive every day. Read Karena’s story at https://brnw.ch/21x3NkB.

A classroom project turned into something much bigger for Brandon, a Heartspring client learning to take more ownership of his daily routine. Through a partnership with Wichita State University and the Wichita State University College of Engineering, students designed and built a custom solution tailored to Brandon's needs, turning a daily limitation into an opportunity for him to gain more independence in a space he uses every day. His story is a powerful example of what happens when clinical care, education, and real-world problem-solving come together. ➡️ Read the full story: https://bit.ly/4vn5sPw

Staff from across Heartspring recently gathered for employee art days to create sensory boards and beaded projects, sharing ideas, building connections, and experiencing firsthand the role art can play in helping the children we serve express and regulate themselves. Extra supplies will extend that impact, supporting Residential teams on evening and weekend shifts to have the same creative opportunity. Employee art days strengthen how we show up for the children and families we serve, creating meaningful opportunities for connection, creativity, and shared purpose.

Our team recently visited six peer organizations across four states to benchmark programs, explore new ideas, and bring back what matters most for the children and families we serve. What we found: meaningful opportunities to innovate, and clear confirmation of where Heartspring already leads, from community-based instruction to interdisciplinary care. These insights help inform how we invest in our programs, facilities, and team, because continuous improvement is part of our commitment to every child we care for.

“He’s made more progress at Heartspring in 18 months than in eight years at home.” - David, Liam's Dad For many families in our Therapeutic School, the hardest moment isn’t deciding to come to Heartspring — it’s what comes next. After traveling hundreds or even thousands of miles, parents return home without their child, trusting our team of experts to support their child’s needs. That kind of decision is never easy. But over time, something begins to change. With the right support, children start to communicate in new ways, participate more fully, and build confidence in moments that once felt overwhelming. At Heartspring, children can turn potential into progress as they grow, connect, and thrive, and these small, steady steps forward make the distance worth it.
