Hearing First exists to support families and professionals on the Listening and Spoken Language (LSL) journey.
About us
Hearing First, an initiative of the Oberkotter Foundation, provides online resources, learning experiences, and information to families and professionals choosing listening and spoken language. We want all children to benefit from the availability of newborn hearing screening and for parents to learn the status of their baby’s hearing first. Hearing is a foundational building block for children to learn to listen and talk, become healthy readers, and do well in school. Today, children who are deaf or hard of hearing can learn to listen and talk and can achieve learning and literacy outcomes on par with their hearing friends. The earlier a child with hearing loss is identified, amplified, and receiving help, the more opportunities that child will have. We are dedicated to powering potential.

Summer activities like road trips, pool days, strolls through the park, and visits to the farmer’s market expose children to vocabulary they may not encounter in daily routines – and provide parents with easy ways to build language. Each new word strengthens listening skills and helps connect language to real-world experience. On a trip to the farmers market, parents can: 🥕 Narrate the experience with Play-by-Play. 🥕 Name colorful fruits and veggies. 🥕 Describe smells, textures, and shapes. 🥕 Talk about what to make with farmers’ market finds! 🥕 Use parentese to capture attention – Incorporate exaggerated phrasing like, “Mmmm! These strawberries smell sooo sweet!” or “Uh-OH! We dropped the apple!” 🥕 Try Audition First – Describe an item before the child sees it: “Oh, I see some berries! They’re blue and look so juicy!” Then, show them the blueberries and enjoy them together: “They're blueberries! Yum, blueberries are my favorite!” Share this video with more fun ways for parents to talk with their baby: https://bit.ly/4wfpFIm #summer #summertime #LSL #listeningandspokenlanguage #hearinglossjourney

Summer is in full swing and many families might be wondering about their child who is deaf or hard of hearing swimming or playing in the water with their hearing technology. Most hearing devices are not fully waterproof, but some cochlear implants have waterproof options. Parents should keep in close partnership with their child's pediatric audiologist to help plan for their child's specific hearing technology so they can dive in with confidence! Here are a few tips to share with families: ✅ Protect the devices. Most hearing aids are water-resistant, not waterproof. ✅ Keep them dry. Keep a drying kit or dehumidifier at home. ✅ Ask the experts. Families should partner with their professional team to find the best gear for their child’s specific devices.
