  • What if the best candidate never gets the job because they don't sound like the interviewer expected? It is an uncomfortable question, but one worth asking! Most of us genuinely believe we hire based on skills and experience. Yet interviews are still shaped by human perception. And perception is rarely as objective as we think. Without even realizing it, we can form opinions based on someone's accent, confidence, speaking pace, or communication style. Those first impressions can influence our decisions long before we have truly assessed whether the person can do the job. - The irony is that communication is one of the most important skills we hire for, but it is also one of the easiest to judge subjectively. - The strongest communicator is not always the loudest. - The fastest speaker is not always the clearest. - The person who sounds most like us is not always the best fit for the role. As hiring becomes more global, this challenge only grows. We are interviewing people from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds. If we want diverse teams, we also need more consistent ways of evaluating communication.
