Did you know that one litre of bottled water may contain up to 240,000 plastic particles? A study from The Ohio State University found that hundreds of thousands micro- and nanoplastics can be released from plastic packaging during manufacturing, transport, storage, and everyday use. Emerging research is exploring how these particles interact with the human body, including potential links to inflammation, oxidative stress, and changes to the gut microbiome. In the UAE, drinking water stored in plastic has become part of our daily lives, from single-use bottles to large water gallons in our homes, offices, and public spaces. With high temperatures and a widespread reliance on bottled water, it is worth asking how we can reduce our dependence on water stored and transported in plastic. As Plastic Free July approaches, perhaps the question is no longer: How do we recycle more plastic bottles? But rather: How do we reduce our reliance on them in the first place? More organisations are beginning to embrace filtration systems, refill stations, and reusable bottles - reducing plastic consumption, minimizing transportation and storage impacts, and helping move us toward a future with less plastic in our environment and our drinking water. Ten years ago, our Founder Tatiana Antonelli Abella, had a simple idea: What if we could encourage people to rethink something as ordinary as a plastic water bottle? From that idea, Drop It – Rethink Plastic was born. Over the past decade, the campaign has inspired individuals, businesses, schools, and communities to rethink their relationship with single-use plastics and embrace more sustainable choices. It has been a journey of learning, collaborating, advocating, and witnessing the incredible power of collective action. Together, we've seen how small, everyday choices can spark meaningful and lasting change. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has been part of this journey—our partners, supporters, volunteers, schools, businesses, and every individual who chose to carry a reusable bottle, challenge the status quo, and inspire others to do the same. What if improving your health started with using less plastic? From what we cook with, to what we wear, consume, and buy, our everyday choices shape our relationship with plastic. Scientists are increasingly finding microplastics in the human body, including in blood, lungs, and the placenta. While researchers are still studying the long-term health implications, these findings highlight just how widespread plastic exposure has become. A tree planting project doesn't end on planting day - it begins there. What began in 2016 with the planting of 200 native trees at the Sharjah Girl Guides has grown into a vibrant natural space that supports biodiversity, provides shade, strengthens the landscape, and continues to thrive today. These before-and-after images are a reminder that successful afforestation is about more than planting trees. It requires patience, commitment, and ongoing care. The remarkable transformation of this site is a testament to the dedication of the landowners, whose continued maintenance and care has enabled these trees to flourish and reach maturity. What was once a bare, exposed landscape, today, that same site has been transformed into a thriving green space that provides shade, supports biodiversity, improves soil health, and creates a healthier environment for both people and wildlife. This is the power of afforestation, turning underutilised land into living landscapes that deliver long-term environmental benefits.
