Global Platform Engineers Network reposted this
🚀 Gateway API is not just an Ingress replacement—it's a platform engineering enabler. Recently, I had the opportunity to speak at Presidio during a session organized by the Global Platform Engineers Network, where I shared practical insights on adopting and migrating to Kubernetes Gateway API. Over the last few years, Kubernetes networking requirements have evolved significantly. Platform teams are expected to provide secure, scalable, and self-service application networking while maintaining governance and operational consistency. Traditional Ingress resources often become a limiting factor as organizations scale. Gateway API introduces a more expressive and role-oriented model that enables: 🔹 Clear separation of responsibilities between platform teams and application teams 🔹 Standardized traffic management across environments 🔹 Enhanced security and policy controls 🔹 Better support for multi-tenant Kubernetes platforms 🔹 Extensible architecture for future networking requirements 🔹 Improved operational consistency and developer experience During the session, we explored: • Why organizations are moving beyond traditional Ingress patterns • Core Gateway API concepts and architecture • Migration approaches and coexistence strategies • Production implementation considerations • Operational best practices and lessons learned from real-world deployments To make the adoption journey easier for the community, I've published all supporting resources from the session, including: 📖 Presentation deck 📑 Comprehensive migration guide 💻 Sample implementations and manifests ⚙️ Automation scripts and deployment examples 🔗 GitHub repository with complete reference code GitHub Link: https://lnkd.in/gmes557W One of the key takeaways from the discussion was that Gateway API is not simply a new Kubernetes networking resource—it represents a shift toward building more scalable, governed, and developer-friendly platform architectures. Many organizations are already evaluating or implementing Gateway API as part of their platform modernization initiatives. The transition may require planning, but the long-term operational and architectural benefits are compelling. Thank you to Presidio and Global Platform Engineers Network for hosting the session and creating a great forum for knowledge sharing among platform engineers and cloud-native practitioners. 🚀 Frictionless IAC is not just about automation—it's a cultural shift in how we build and deliver infrastructure. Recently, I had the pleasure of speaking at a meetup organized by Presidio and Global Platform Engineers Network, where I dove into practical ways to transform the Infrastructure as Code (IaC) experience. In modern cloud environments, IaC has become standard, but it often comes with its own friction. Teams struggle with security vulnerabilities, unforeseen costs, and a lack of visibility into infrastructure changes, leading to slow and risky release cycles. The solution is a "shift-left" philosophy, embedding automated checks directly into the developer workflow. By catching issues early, we can build more secure, cost-effective, and reliable infrastructure. My talk focused on three powerful open-source tools that make this possible: 🔹 Checkov: For automated security scanning and misconfiguration detection. 🔹 Rover: For interactive Terraform visualization and plan exploration. 🔹 Infracost: For providing clear, upfront cost estimates for infrastructure changes. During the session, we explored: The common challenges of modern IaC development. The core principles of the "shift-left" approach. How to integrate Checkov, Rover, and Infracost into a CI/CD pipeline. Real-world benefits, including improved security posture and cost governance. A live demo of a unified workflow providing feedback on security, cost, and visualization for every pull request. To help the community adopt these practices, I've made all the resources from the session available: 📖 Presentation Slides ⚙️ CI/CD Workflow YAML 🔗 GitHub Repository with complete reference code GitHub Link: https://lnkd.in/gtsgKYkS One of the key takeaways was that by providing engineers with immediate, actionable feedback, we empower them to own the quality and cost of their infrastructure. This not only reduces risk but also fosters a stronger culture of collaboration between development and operations teams. A huge thank you to Presidio and Global Platform Engineers Network for organizing this fantastic event and to everyone who attended and participated in the discussion. 🚀 Platform Engineering Series #3
🚀 Platform Engineering Series #3: What a Platform Engineer Does: Building Internal Products for Developers Key Mindset: Building and operating an internal product for developers. Platform Engineers are more than infrastructure operators, Kubernetes admins, or CI/CD maintainers; they are product builders. They focus on developer experience to solve real problems, not only for individual developers but for the entire organization. Key Responsibilities: Create Golden Paths: This includes elements like service creation templates, standardized CI/CD setups, or production-ready observability configurations. The goal is to provide reusable, self-service solutions to improve consistency across the organization, rather than reinventing the wheel. Reduce Cognitive Load: Observe complexities and expose simpler interfaces by abstracting the right layers, ensuring guardrails and flexibility are in the appropriate places. Enable Self-Service Systems: Build systems that eliminate the need for creating tickets, with the primary goal of achieving autonomy at scale. Design Scalable and Consistent Products: Ensure solutions are designed to scale and maintain consistency, avoiding one-off solutions. Measure adoption across the organization to track impact. Build Platform as a Product: Define clear targets, identify pain points, and actively mitigate them as part of the platform's product development lifecycle.
