UNICEF recently reported that its new ODK-based community feedback channel expanded access to accountability mechanisms in hard-to-reach communities across Sudan. Through the new channel, frontline workers submitted more than 300 cases, surfacing issues ranging from water shortages and disease outbreaks to food insecurity and displacement. It’s great to see UNICEF using ODK to help ensure that even the hardest-to-reach communities can have a voice. What does energy access actually look like beyond the grid? KOC Bridges to Peace and Stanley (Karana) Olivier are spending the next month visiting villages in Côte d'Ivoire, and using ODK to record how rural communities access, store, and use energy. They'll be measuring battery capacity, documenting charging practices, tracking energy costs, mapping wind resources, and recording how electricity is used in everyday life. Last week, we shipped one of the most requested features for ODK. Instead of downloading every record and filtering afterward, ODK now delivers only the records relevant to each person. An enumerator can only see the households they’re following up with. A field officer can only map farms in their region. A partner organization can only report on the projects assigned to them. As a project manager, one of the hardest parts of mapping at scale is making sure everyone is working from the same data. ODK now lets field teams see previously captured points, traces, and shapes while capturing new geometry! That means they can: - Avoid duplicate mapping - Align boundaries with neighboring features - Capture more accurate geometry in the field And this isn’t limited to a single form. Teams can reference geometry captured earlier in the form, within repeats, across multiple forms, and by other users.
