As millions of fans have traveled to and across North America for the 2026 World Cup™ this summer, millions of locals are also enjoying the action that’s arrived in their hometowns. And they’re sharing their experiences across the entire journey — from landing at airports, to arriving at stadiums, to navigating host cities, to celebrating together and learning the customs of locals and visitors alike. All moments that make this tournament memorable far beyond the game. Voice of the Fan, developed in partnership with ROAR, a Seregh Company, brings those stories together, analyzing tens of thousands of public social media posts to reveal how stadiums, districts, and host cities each play a part in shaping the fan experience throughout the tournament. The dashboard offers a new way to understand what most excites fans and where the experience can improve. Guided by fresh perspectives from the fan-centered tool, we can better shape how the power of place can elevate cultural moments that bring people together. The future of football is built long before match day. Omar Quesada Arias, Gensler Sports Design Director, and Luis Palma, Vice President of Operations for the Federación Mexicana de Fútbol, sit down to discuss their five-year experience of designing the Mexican Football Federation’s High-Performance Center (CAR) in Tlalpan. The new home and training ground for the Mexican National Team was envisioned as a long-term investment in athlete development, well-being, and the future of soccer across Mexico and Latin America. “This project raises the regional benchmark,” says Omar Quesada. “We hope it inspires clubs and federations to invest more strategically in infrastructure. Architecture can become a driver of sports development and a generator of institutional value.” “For clubs, it’s a benchmark. For fans, it’s hope. For children who dream of wearing the national jersey, it’s an aspiration,” says Luis Palma. “When methodology, culture, and design converge, a campus becomes a platform capable of supporting and elevating generations of athletes who will shape the future of the game.” Learn more about the design process: https://lnkd.in/enSY8ZDv #FutureofSports #SportsDesign #MexicoSoccer #MexicanaFutbol #MexicanNationalTeam #TrainingFacility

Rising from a coastal island in Yantai, the Huang-Bohai Sea New Area Industrial Culture Center reimagines what a civic landmark can be. Four sculptural blocks—clad in locally sourced white granite—interlock and rotate in a nod to the Chinese idiom “百舸争流” (a hundred boats vying for the lead), capturing the momentum of Ba Jiao Bay. Inside, a four-story atrium glows beneath cascading skylights, its curved ceiling echoing traditional boat construction. Floor-to-ceiling glass dissolves the line between architecture and sea, framing panoramic views of the Bajiaowan skyline. From immersive 720° VR voyages to a library where bookshelves meet the horizon, every space tells the story of a fishing village turned innovation hub. More than a cultural center, it’s a new civic landmark connecting industry, community, and coast. 📸: BlackStation

New data from our forthcoming Sports Urbanism research shows that 94% of fans want MORE than just what happens inside the arena on game day. They want to eat nearby. Wander the neighborhood. Tailgate. People-watch. Shop. Take selfies. Make a whole day of it. This desire to linger and enjoy the areas surrounding games and events has significant implications for operators, urban planners, and developers seeking to deliver experiences that resonate in new ways. Our full report is coming soon. You can discover early findings in the latest blog by Lauren Adams, Director of Lifestyle Research: Can Sports Save Us? Sports venues aren't just places to watch a game anymore. They're becoming destinations where restaurants, parks, entertainment, and public spaces are just as important as what happens on the field. In the newest edition of Research by Gensler, we explore what nearly 6,000 North American residents say they want from sports districts and introduce Voice of the Fan, a new way of understanding the fan experience through social-media conversations shared during the 2026 World Cup. See why the future of sports venues may depend just as much on the district around them as the stadium itself.

What if we studied sports from the fan's perspective? Today, Gensler is launching the Voice of the Fan dashboard, a new platform that analyzes fan conversations taking place in-game at this summer’s World Cup 2026 events. https://lnkd.in/gcWEQyDf While much of the sports industry focuses on attendance, revenue, and economic impact, this effort focuses on something different: understanding how fans experience venues, districts, and the moments that surround an event. Developed with ROAR, A Seregh Company, the dashboard is part of a broader research initiative exploring the future of sports districts and the role they play in creating memorable experiences for fans, residents, and communities. “The World Cup offers a lens into how global events shape the fan experience in and around venues,” ROAR, A Seregh Company President Adam Grossman said. “Gensler and ROAR analysis of organic social post content enables us to better understand how fans engage at these events and use that analysis to better conceive, design, and operationalize the inside and outside the venue experience." Follow along throughout the tournament to see what fans are saying, and to preview insights from our forthcoming Sports Urbanism report, launching this fall. The 2026 World Cup is proving that you don’t have to build new to build better. Host cities across the US, Canada, and Mexico are renovating existing venues instead of starting from scratch — and the results speak for themselves. Toronto’s BMO Field partnered with Gensler to get gameday-ready, expanding from ~29,000 to 45,000 seats using a flexible system designed for disassembly and reuse. Smart design, zero waste. The future of sports infrastructure isn’t about tearing down and rebuilding. It’s about recognizing the value of what already exists. Sports may be one of the few things left that consistently gets us off the couch and into the company of others. As cities invest in stadiums and sports districts, the opportunity is bigger than game day. New research from Gensler and Oxford Economics suggests fans want venues that function as community hubs year-round — with dining, entertainment, gathering spaces, and experiences that make the neighborhood a destination in its own right. In fact, 92% of respondents said they’re open to visiting the area around a sports venue even when they’re not attending an event. Swipe —> to see what fans say would draw them to a stadium district on an ordinary day, not just on game day. The 2026 Prix Versailles World Selection has recognized two of Gensler’s recently completed projects, Pittsburgh International Airport’s new terminal and Terminal 1 at San Diego International Airport, on its annual list of the world’s best contemporary architecture projects. Gensler is proud to be the only firm represented twice on this year’s #Aviation list. The Prix de Versailles honors global projects for their innovation, creativity, efficiency, and reflection of local heritage across categories. Designed by Gensler and HDR in association with luis vidal + architects, Pittsburgh International Airport’s new terminal stands out for its integration of regional identity and operational innovation, while Terminal 1 at San Diego International Airport earns high marks for transforming one of the nation’s busiest single-runway airports into a landmark of sustainability and civic design. “Both of these projects represent something we care deeply about at Gensler; the idea that a great airport can genuinely transform a city’s relationship with the world,” said Ty Osbaugh, Principal and Global Aviation Leader at Gensler. “Pittsburgh and San Diego are complete reinventions: new buildings that future-proof their airports for a new generation of travelers while giving their communities something to be proud of. That ambition is exactly what the Prix de Versailles recognizes, and we’re honored to be on this list.” 📷 by Ema Peter Photography #PrixdeVersailles #AirportDesign #AviationDesign #TerminalDesign #BestAirports #MostBeautifulAirport #SanDiegoAirport #PittsburghAirport #SustainableDesign
