We just had Sara Cullen CEO of GEM, on the Spear Podcast — and her perspective on hiring was fantastic. I asked her what she looks for in new team members, and her answer really stood out. She builds a scorecard with five hard skills and five soft skills. The hard skills are role-specific, while the soft skills are tied directly to Gem’s core values. She’s intentional about ensuring candidates align with those values and are people she truly enjoys being around. When you’re building a company, you’ll spend countless hours with your team. It’s critical to surround yourself with people you respect and want to spend time with. As the saying goes, you become the people you spend time with.
